Hi good folks,
I've got my eye on a excellent condition Mossberg 500 in 20 gauge at a local pawnshop for $179.95. I'm not a hunter but would use it around my country homestead and as a camp gun. Can you recommend a load for self-defense and is there a slug load for the woods?

~Thanks, John

I use the federal classic 2 3/4" #3 buckshot load for home defense in my 870. Winchester also has a 2 3/4" #3 buck load and a 3" #2 buck load. I believe that all the major american manufacturers that make shotshells offer some kind of slug load. I tried the Federal truball and remington load. Neither was really more accurate than the other.

One of my favorite guns ,and I have shot these for many years. Slugs are indeed available from most manufacturers as mentioned and right now the #3 buckshot is about the only thing available in the 2&3/4 inch loadings.

Nothing the matter with that however !

Smooth bore guns do not shoot the sabot slugs worth a darn so you don't have to worry about paying the high price of sabots. Just get the regular rifled slugs . (forester type , if I spelled it right - if not some English teacher will be sure to come along and correct it)
