hey all i recently got a little tired of my mossberg 835 pump gun and im looking for something a little shorter with the same range for skeet/indoor practice/home defense. i was looking at the remington 870 standard or marine magnum or the mossberg 590. my price range is going to be under $500 and i know you can get a quality long lasting shotgun for that.

get the 590,benelli nova,or the remington would be good if the safety and action release were in easier spots thats why i say go mossberg or benelli.

are the mossberg shotguns worth it? i mean i own the 835 but i want something that can compete with the remington and other big name competitors.

Wow... And, here I always thought that Mossberg was a big name. I lot of soldiers and Marines will be sorry to hear that they have been using no-name shotguns.

compete?

How so?

If it's measured in mere repertoire, then no, I guess the mossberg can't compete.

But, if you're talking about reliability, quality and practicality, I consider mossberg to be the superior shotgun.

with the same range for skeet

guess I'm not quite understanding this part of the question.

Are you talking about shooting the GAME called skeet? Short barrel tactical guns are usually a little harder to do well in that regard. Either way, same range? Please clarify for me....

so i went clay shooting a few weeks ago and I had a maverick 88 (slightly not as decked out mossberg 500) with an 18 inch barrle. I owned the guys with hunting length 870s and bird guns...it was really funny. I have this stubby like black shotgun with synthetic furniture that i got for like 200 bucks and they couldn't hit anything with much nicer remingtons.

Was that at a gun club or in a pasture? I have never seen a tactical length shotgun in any winner's circle at ANY shotgun competition in any of the states I have shot in

i was looking for an all around shtogun. closer to the size of a tactical short barrel shotgun. i already have a skeet gun but im looking for something i can use more for home defense and indoor ranges. the skeet and trap shooting isnt as important. the mossberg 590 looks like my best bet but im also looking at the benelli supernova tactical. has anyone had any experience with either of these or could recommend one.

That depends more on the shooter than the gun. You already know where the controls are on a Mossberg, just get a 590 or 590A1 and BA/UU/R....

Get a gently used semi and start a barrel collection. I'm partial to gas Remingtons, they supposedly recoil a tad less, lots of barrels and accessories out there since they've been around forever. Takes about 5 minutes to change from my goose gun to my dove or home defender. I'm sure the same goes for other big brands as well.

I used an 870 on guard duty many years ago. My Marines carried 870's years later. The Marines now carry Mossbergs among others. If the Marines carry without breaking them inside of two weeks they can compete with Remingtons. :what:

I was at the club the other day. A little old man came to the trap range, stooped nearly in half, leaning heavily on a cane, shambling. They let him shoot alone, which I thought was weird (there was good weather line, and they were putting strangers together to fill out the squads). But I thought - maybe because he is so obviously handicapped. He had a magnificent, gorgeous, invaluable shotgun. Then I learned the other reason why he got to shoot alone - he was lickety-split fast and missed 0/25 from the 16 yard line. I tried to watch and learn - but he was so fast. No follow through I could detect.

After he came over and sat down, he chatted with us waiting. Everyone remarked on his incredible shooting and how nice his gun was (he gave details about the gun that I forget - it was European, and semi-automatic). Then, somebody made a remark to the effect of how his good shooting was all the gun. He offered to take that jerk's place in line, use his gun and shells, and see how he did. After some back-and-forth, somebody volunteered a field Maverick 88 pump instead. We insisted he cut in line and shoot, rather than wait. He missed 0/25 again.

I always tease my shooting buddy that he scores better than me because he has more expensive guns. His standing offer is that he will trade with me any time and still beat me. I know he's right, but I still like to tease him with it.

I always beg off on the trade by saying that I'm afraid I might scratch his fancy gun.

I have managed to sneak in a couple of wins but not many.

Get a Benelli Tactical Nova/Super Nova. Far superior to the 870 or the 500/590.

Unless of course it's an older 870...New remingtons are crap. Benelli has way better quality control. Take it from someone who's owned them all.

Why on earth would you do that?

i like the safety and action release spots better on the mossberg. also the mossberg has a 7+1 mag, while the benelli only has a 4 +1. and i would rather own something American. just like how i would rather have a Chevy alot more then a bmw.

i like mossberg, and 590 is one of my favorite so i am not attacking anyong, but i think mossberg is starting to be made in mexico. i picked up an after market barrel at gander mountain and on the box said product of mexico or manufactured in mexico something to that effect. i was bummed out.

You know you could just get a 18" barrel for your 835 right? Add an extended Nordic Comp mag tube (or not) and you have a HD shotgun.
