a new tactical shotgun

After some back-and-forth, somebody volunteered a field Maverick 88 pump instead. We insisted he cut in line and shoot, rather than wait. He missed 0/25 again.
This would imply that the shooter and his skillset is more important than the equipment, something that we all know to be patently false. It's gear, gear, gear! ;-)

(I love it when old geezers pull that trick!)

i think im going to go with the mossberg 590. if its good enough for the military its good enough for me. do you guys know from experience how the sights that they come with are or should i buy some aftermarket ones?

The 590 is a good gun but

it is not the Marine shotgun. The 590A1 is the gun the Marines carry. The main difference between the two is that a couple of parts, like the trigger guard, on the 590A1 are made of metal where they are made of plastic on the 590. I have both the 590 and and 870 HD. Unless you are going into combat or doing a lot of competition, I would choose the 870. It is lighter and quicker, for me at least. I like the 590 but it is a tank. The ghost ring sights are nice but mine are not well regulated. In order to get it sighted in my sight is way right. It looks odd but it works.

The official USMC issued shotgun is the Benelli M4.

i really like that remington 870 with the 18.5" barrel that takes rem chokes. light, short, handy, and gives you the ability to tune your shot patturn with a wide variety of loads at any distance. it also comes with a factory +2 extension. i picked one up last spring for $360.

Get a Benelli Tactical Nova/Super Nova. Far superior to the 870 or the 500/590.

How is it better? I had a Benelli Tactical Nova that was a POS, traded it for a Saiga that was not much better. The joke around the range is here comes Chuck with his sad Saiga made by "Is A Mess Arms" (Izmesh Arms of Russia). I'll stick with Mossberg and Remington.

Gee, come to think of it the Benelli shotgun was just like a Benelli motorbike I had, a POS.

how is the remington 870 tactical vs the 590? are there preferences or is one actually proven to be better?

Madjohn, both the 590 and 870 are amazing weapons in trained, capable hands. As to which is better, it boils down to personal choice.

My defensive shotguns are 870s. But, if only a 590 was at hand when things got hinky, I doubt my effectiveness would be compromised.

Actually, just about every shotgun mentioned in this thread makes up into a very good weapon in those hands mentioned above.

Why, of course it's the gear. Something guitar players and golfers have known for years.

Someone has to keep the economy going. :D
