Took a Rem 742 and a M1 Garand to the public range as this is the last weekend of the current permit (exp 7/31/06). Both decided to malf on me.

Started out with the 742, wanted to zero after a scope swap. Got the rifle from a great-uncle's estate. When I got it it had a AIMPoint 1000 Red-dot scope on it. Today I swapped to a 40mm red dot that I took off a .357.

First rounds out were in the black at 50 yds, but before I could start to zero the scope, I had what appeared to be a FTE.

Only after I got the cartridge out of the chamber did I notice that the extractor rim was torn, the base was bulged, and the Berdan primer had blown out (Silver Bear 145gr .30-06).

I'm thinking that the cartridge was not fully chambered and the bolt was unlocked when it fired. (see related question in Rifle Country)

So I put that one away and try the M1. Three clips in and the clip starts popping out after 5 rounds. Grr, it worked fine the last time I had it out (80 rounds trouble free then). I was testing an adjustable gas plug today, fortunately I got that figured out with the first clip.

Just ordered a new clip latch and clip latch spring.
