A question about snake shot.

The 40 S&W CCI shot shells that are made for automatics uses 88 grains of #9 shot and an elongated case without a plastic cup on the end like most other calibers. I didn't know the amount of shot they contained till I looked it up. 1250 fps is advertised at the muzzle. They use #12 shot for 9mm and smaller. I'll have to measure the case to see exactly how long the CCI cases are.

Unfired, they are 1.086" long.

(A 10mm case is .992".)

But, they are necked down to .389" the last .236" so they will chamber in a .850" long .40 S&W chamber.

I do the same as 35 whelen when I'm at the farm, one snake shot in the chamber and the rest are regular loads and I'll add a snake pic too.

After dragging the water primrose out of the lake I found this snake trying to get the catfish down at the edge.

Eww...

We lived in East Texas for a couple of years and the sloughs and creeks on our farm had those cottonmouths. I hated those things as they were fearless and tended to be aggressive. The last one I ran across was when I was baling hay. I spotted him in the creek but for whatever reason I was unarmed that day. Wound up beating him the death with an old bois d' arc fence post. As cottonmouths go, he was huge. About the diameter of my forearm (4") and close to 5' in length.

IMO: #12 shot kills snakes much better & faster then #8 shot or #6 shot.

I was not suggesting #6/8# for snakes...

As I live in VT, we have little need for 'snake shot'...

What I use mine for is vermin control, and the occasional bunny when hunting other species...

Thanks RC saved me from taking mine out and measuring it. It looks as if building snake shot for the 40 is not going to happen at a home work bench with out allot of work and expense. I just hate not being able to buy them when I need them and having to pay on average of $2.50 a round for a box of 10. That is why I have only one box and it still sealed up at the moment.
