I own two HK USP pistols, a 9mm full size and a 9mm compact. I like both guns, the grips fit my hand well and they're both accurate. The problem I have is both guns throw brass straight back into my face and occasionally stovepipe. I am pretty sure it isn't me(limp-wristing), I have a variety of semi-auto pistols and the USP's are the only ones that do this.

Are their any other HK owners out there that have this problem? How do I fix it?

Tex

How many rounds have been through each? What type of ammo stovepipes, is it +p? Depending on your answers, I'm leaning towards the recoil springs needing replaced.

change the recoil springs if there is a high round count and when you clean make sure you get all the crud out from under the extractor claw. that should help. Are you shooting factory ammo or reloads? Low power reloads might cause the brass in the face thing

So far I have only used factory ammo, mostly 115 grain ball, in both guns and I clean them after every trip to the range. As far as round counts the fullsize has about 2,000 and I bought it NIB. I don't know about the compact, I bought it used but I've only run about a 1,000 round through it.

Thanks for the replies,

Tex

what brand is the ammo? :scrutiny: try some wwb or remington value pack.
it's not the springs, maybe the spring is a bit stiff but definitely has not lost its power.

I bet at some point Wolff ammo was used in both of these guns, probably fired rapidly heating up the chambers. Chances are there is melted laquer in the chambers that is slowing extraction. I would remove both barrels and submerge them in laquer thinner overnight and then brush them out really well in the AM. Finally, spray them with brake cleaner, or bore solvent, relube, reassemble, and try again.

The problem affecting both guns has got to be ammo. I have had the same thing affect other pistols with match chambers.

I own several HKs and I have never had a similar problem to the one you describe. What about the Wolf Ammo? If you don't get a satisfactory answer here try going to HKPRO.com. It is another great site like this one and there are many HK-savy people posting.

I don't know about the 9mm

But my USP 45's don't do that. I had a 1911 that did the same thing about 2 years ago, and the problem was that the ejector was too short. I don't know if this is your problem, but that is where I would start. Some say that HK's customer service is ****, but the one time that I needed them, they were Johnny on the Spot.
Hope this helps,
Freddy

I would submit that question to the HKpro.com forum They have really helped me out on my HK questions. I would aalso do a search on hteir site because I believe it has already been addressed.

Some of the early USP's had a very tight ejection arc and most lefty's had a problem with the ejected casings hitting them in the face. Are you a lefty?

Stovepipe indicates weak loads or too strong spring. I had that prob with a PPK until I started handloading with max loads. No prob since. Never a prob with my H&Ks.
