I've not been around here in several years but I'd like to have an answer from someone with more experience than I've accumulated in the couple of years since beginning to practice this art.
My 7.92x57 experiences has on recently begun. What I've done that's given me concerns is changed bullet type and powder. Using 46gr. of H414 with a 200gr. jacketed soft-point I can attain, from the hodgdon charts, an OAL of 2.970". I've switched to using 52gr. of IMR 4350 with a 196gr. HPBT. The case is approaching being full to the neck and seating the bullet to 2.970" really is compacting the powder far more than I'm comfortable with doing for feeding my sweet old mauser. I've backed OAL off to 3.125" which is pretty close to the milsurp length.
Should there be an issue with this move, or am I making a proper move?

I'm not seeing a 7.92x57 Mauser in Hodgdon's loading pages? Where did you get your data?

He's talking about the 8mm Mauser.

I'll assume you know it has a .323 bore.

1. Two different bullet profiles with the 200 grain SP and the 196 grain HPBT.

2. The 196gr is longer than the 200gr Speer bullet in the Hodgdon data.

3. You need to find the COAL for your rifle with the 196 grainer.

Should there be an issue with this move, or am I making a proper move?

Cant really answer the above for sure.

How far is the 196gr, seated to 3.125", from the lands?

What your max COAL for the rifle/bullet (196gr) combo?

Have you worked up to the 52gr IMR 4350 load in that rifle?

gotmine,

To make sure you know what I'm talking about with different bullet profiles and how just guessing at a COAL is not the way to go w/o measuring.

My Remington M700 (8x57mm) max COAL with a 200 grain Partition is 3.09" touching the lands. The 200 grain Accubomb can go all the way out to 3.16". Imagine if I just loaded the Partition (using the AccuBombs measurement as a guide) to A COAL of 3.12, jamming the bullet in the lands.

In my other 8x57mm (an M70), the max COAL (hitting the lands) with a 200 grain Partition is 3.065". You catch the drift.

So your 3.125" may be OK it may not.

Could the 200gr Speer be seat out further than the hodgdon 2.97" in your rifle, maybe.

I really appreciate this info and shall look closely at everything. I'm far more concerned with causing any issue that harms the old Czech girl. If it has made it through a WW and who know what else remaining in as good of condition as it is then I consider it a piece history left in my care.
I also was not even considering the ogive differences because the HPBT are pretty much shaped as the 60gr. 5.45 rounds I've got while the others are more pronounce in the arc. Thanks again for the response and info.
