My wife and I just returned from a two week vacation in the state of Arizona and the Palm Springs area of California. (We live in Los Angeles, sorry to say).

In Arizona, it was an interesting experience being able to legally travel with a loaded pistol in the passenger compartment of our vehicle. As soon as we crossed the border from CA to AZ, we excercised our right and unlocked and loaded the pistol (S&W .38 special) and kept it with us in the truck and in the hotel rooms.

Upon arrival in Calif again, the pistol was unloaded, locked in its case and placed in our luggage in the back while the ammunition was stored in the center console.

Upon arrival at our timeshare in the Palm Springs area late in the evening, we were walking down the outside pathway to our unit, when we saw a couple of guys who looked like they did not "belong" there (attitude, gang dress, etc.) and they were just looking around at doors and other areas, but did not appear to be lost.

After we settled in our condo, my wife, remembering the two guys outside, asked where the pistol was. I told her in the luggage, but the ammo was in the truck. While she was never one to eagerly be around a loaded gun, she told me to go get the ammo quickly and load the pistol, so I did. After that, she did not worry any more.

This year I have purchased several rifles and a couple of pistols, so about a month ago, my wife said no more guns until 2009. The morning after our arrival, at her request, we visited a local gun shop in Palm Springs area (about 120 miles from our house) and my wife bought a new handgun for her. It is a Kahr Elite K9, 9mm. She also got a holster, a two mag carrier and a spare magazine (for a total of 3 mags).

The state of Calif., (Los Angeles in particular) makes it very difficult to carry guns for SD. There is no way that I can get a carry permit in Los Angeles, but I have just applied for the Utah non-resident permit. As soon as I can retire in just a couple of years, I think we will move to AZ or ID or some other enlightened state.

If you visit Arizona, be aware that you can get a non-resident CCW here too. Requirements are the same as for a resident, and getting a license is not difficult.

Steverjo, Idaho is a "Shall Issue" State, plus an "Open Carry" State.

When we moved here ten years ago, from Los Angeles (after 35 years), my wife took the CCW course, went to the Sheriff's Dept., applied, fingerprints, picture, $35.00, and three weeks later her CCW came in the mail. Good for four years before renewal. No problem.

As you said, California has mainly forbidden the worker peasants to protect themselves, except at home, especially in the metropolitain areas. (I know, I know. A few of the more rural counties give out CCWs, but that doesn't do one any good if he or she lives in the metropolitain counties.)

Also, if you are a hunter, you can carry a handgun while hunting with bow & arrow, or muzzleloader. A fisherman?? Same thing. Idaho believes in the Right of Self Defense.

FWIW.
