Well had to be up at Cabela’s in Columbus, on Sunday, to train a couple service dog teams that I’m working with. It’s our normal training time and a chance to get away from the kennel and barn for the afternoon and get some shooting done. Got training done earlier than normal and I headed to the range.

Shot my new G22Gen5 and it’s everything and that! Old habits die hard, and giving up on G22s is one of them. And the new Gen5s make it worth the cost of a new holster that doubt I will ever use. LOL

Shot my new Shield Plus also. Was not too impressed at first. Shooting way to the right. I’m a lefty, so thinking it’s my grip or trigger pull. But months or rehab on the shoulder and laser trainer, I’ve gotten stronger. Became very aware or grip and trigger pull, slowed it down, and still shooting way to the right. Got to me, I’m thinking. So I pull out my G43 that I was pocket carrying that day. It’s snappy and bounces around, hard for my damaged hands to hold on it for too long. Dead on with the G43. Hmmm. Shot the Plus more, slower cadence, and it got a little better but still way to the right. I will change the sights out for a HiViz fiber optic ones I got for it and see if that helps. It’s too busy, for me, with three large white dots. Need blacked out rears, or at least duller colors in the rear. My other disappointment was the trigger in the Plus. It’s just not the hinged mushy trigger like in the others. It’s a flat faced mushy trigger! Not really much of an improvement in my book. But not really bad either. Will give it a few more range sections before I give up on it, it’s a nice feeling pistol and handles recoil great. My hands like it. By far the easiest shooting small pistol I have tried.

Rented a couple pistols as well. Tried the G23Gen5. Like it’s bigger brother the G22, the new Gen5 really helped out the recoil and made shooting it “fun”. I shot 50 rounds of 40SW and had no problem with my hands. With my older G23, I was good for about two mags worth. And this box of shells was shot after I shot 150 rounds through my G22 and a good 200 rounds through my Shield and G43. So very impressed.

Was wanting to try the Taurus GX4, but all they had was the Ruger Max 9 for newer smaller pistols that I haven’t shot. I got it and very glad I did. It’s got a snap to it, but more of a rise and not a bad slam to the hand. It grouped as well as a larger pistol about on par with a P365, and way better than most of the new Rugers I have had. Don’t like the trigger, don’t like half cocked single action whatever system they are using, but it shoots great. Range Officer said they haven’t had any problems with their range rental Max 9. But will shoot a GX4 before I get a Max 9.

As I type up this, trigger finger’s knuckles a little swollen and stiff. And right shoulder didn’t get me fits last night. So most be mending.

I like the looks of the Max9, and handled one at a gun shop. Its worth a try, so is the Hellcat. I was more impressed by it.

Its a good looking pistol. like i said, I shot the Max 9 and really liked it. Just don’t think it’s that well made. Not really impressed with Ruger’s pistols of late. Miss the SR series. Although, the American is a well made line. Just about twenty years too late.

I tried the Hellcat and wasn’t impressed. I know those that really like it, but it’s not a fun gun for my to shoot.

The GX4 is the only new small 9 mm I haven’t shot yet. Might just pick one up if the Black Friday sales drop the prices enough. Like the back straps and wish Sig would have offered that.

Rugers SR9C is my favorite. Fully ambidextrous, easy to shoot . Compact 10rds+1rd.
I still see them on Gunbroker...I should get one for mrs f...

Shot the MAX 9 two more times. I have to say it’s the most accurate of the newer small 9 mms, in my paws. And very controlled recoil.
And to add:
1) I was wrong about it’s half cocked hammer operation. It’s a real striker fired pistol. Shot it side by side with a Security 9 Compact and the trigger feel is very different.
2) still don’t think it would last a long time shot weekly, but I don’t shoot like I use to either. Hope I’m wrong, but just doesn’t sturdy like the American or older SR series. I did get to take it down and look it over good. It’s made well and the range said they haven’t had any trouble with their’s. Hope I’m wrong.

If the MAX 9 gets down to around $375 locally, I might have to buy it.

Did get to shoot the Taurus GX4 this week. Just popped off a few behind the barn into a round bale, but still got a feel for its recoil and how it handles. I like it enough to take it shooting this weekend. Will see how it groups for me and how it compares to the MAX 9. Hard to beat the $375 price tag and the swapable back straps. And bet it get lower after the holidays.

@LeftyRed I have a Shield Plus and it shoots spot on for me. I bought it because it's on the large end of the Micro spectrum. It replaced a P365. It has a fairly comfortable grip..I added a Hogue Handall and now it's a great fit for my lanky hand. I find the trigger has very little take up and to have rather crisp clean break. I put it on a par with my flat triggered Sig P365XL. How do you find it mushy?

@WheelGunMan the Shield Plus fits my hand, is very soft in recoil, and point naturally for me. But I can’t hit squat with it or any other Shield version. My lost for sure.

I’m not a trigger snob. I shoot a Glock for crying out loud! LOL
But I find the Shield’s trigger no better than the previous versions. It might look like an Apex trigger, but it ain’t one. The Shield’s trigger is very usable and several folks really like it. If it shot straight for me, I would just train with it and go on. But I still find the Shield’s trigger mushy, almost XD mushy but not as bad as Taurus G2 mushy.

My LNIB Shield Plus went to someone that will love it for the fine pistol it is and I will care for the G19X I took in trade.
