Well had to be up at Cabela’s in Columbus, on Sunday, to train a couple service dog teams that I’m working with. It’s our normal training time and a chance to get away from the kennel and barn for the afternoon and get some shooting done. Got training done earlier than normal and I headed to the range.
Shot my new G22Gen5 and it’s everything and that! Old habits die hard, and giving up on G22s is one of them. And the new Gen5s make it worth the cost of a new holster that doubt I will ever use. LOL
Shot my new Shield Plus also. Was not too impressed at first. Shooting way to the right. I’m a lefty, so thinking it’s my grip or trigger pull. But months or rehab on the shoulder and laser trainer, I’ve gotten stronger. Became very aware or grip and trigger pull, slowed it down, and still shooting way to the right. Got to me, I’m thinking. So I pull out my G43 that I was pocket carrying that day. It’s snappy and bounces around, hard for my damaged hands to hold on it for too long. Dead on with the G43. Hmmm. Shot the Plus more, slower cadence, and it got a little better but still way to the right. I will change the sights out for a HiViz fiber optic ones I got for it and see if that helps. It’s too busy, for me, with three large white dots. Need blacked out rears, or at least duller colors in the rear. My other disappointment was the trigger in the Plus. It’s just not the hinged mushy trigger like in the others. It’s a flat faced mushy trigger! Not really much of an improvement in my book. But not really bad either. Will give it a few more range sections before I give up on it, it’s a nice feeling pistol and handles recoil great. My hands like it. By far the easiest shooting small pistol I have tried.
Rented a couple pistols as well. Tried the G23Gen5. Like it’s bigger brother the G22, the new Gen5 really helped out the recoil and made shooting it “fun”. I shot 50 rounds of 40SW and had no problem with my hands. With my older G23, I was good for about two mags worth. And this box of shells was shot after I shot 150 rounds through my G22 and a good 200 rounds through my Shield and G43. So very impressed.
Was wanting to try the Taurus GX4, but all they had was the Ruger Max 9 for newer smaller pistols that I haven’t shot. I got it and very glad I did. It’s got a snap to it, but more of a rise and not a bad slam to the hand. It grouped as well as a larger pistol about on par with a P365, and way better than most of the new Rugers I have had. Don’t like the trigger, don’t like half cocked single action whatever system they are using, but it shoots great. Range Officer said they haven’t had any problems with their range rental Max 9. But will shoot a GX4 before I get a Max 9.
As I type up this, trigger finger’s knuckles a little swollen and stiff. And right shoulder didn’t get me fits last night. So most be mending.
