A term to replace "Assault Weapon" : "Modern Rifle"

Ever been to a college sorority party?

Underage drinking, alcohol related sexual assaults, a few DUIs, maybe a couple alcohol related accidents, etc benefit society how exactly?

I never use the term 'assault weapon' unless I'm referring specifically to the AWB bill and its sunset (and its total lack of impact on crime). When I do use the term I preface it in the following manner: "The so-called Assault Weapons Ban was a total failure in regards to its stated purpose . . "

The OP does make a good point IMO. Language matters and the antis have used it skillfully. If talking with others about this topic I refer to 'civilian semi auto rifles'. With other gun guys, I just call them ARs, AKs, FALs, etc and we know we're talking semi auto versions.

Of course, most of us here should know that none of this has anything to do with 'being reasonable'. Theres an agenda, and they want the American people disarmed, just like in most places in the world that don't have the 2nd Amendment.

this do get ridiculous

Anti-gunners call it a "sniper rifle" and want to ban it, turn it into a NFA weapon, or otherwise restrict it (http://www.vpc.org/graphics/snipcov2.pdf).

I recall back in the day of the Cuban Revolution (Castro overthrew dictator Batista and became the new dictator) there were frequent pictures of Fidel Castro posing with his arm de guerre, a Winchester Model 70 with what appeared to me to be a Weaver K4 'scope, the 1950s Elmer Fudd deer and antelope special. Or Commie Subversive Rifle.

And food for thought:

Based on Meyer, G.E., Banos, A.S., Gerondale, T., Kiriazes, K., Lanklin C.M. & Rinker, A.C. (2009). "Juries, Gender, and Assault Weapons", Journal of Applied Social Pscychology, 39, 945-972.

Mock jury (law students) given: Questionable shoot by homeowner against burglar caught stealing a VCR; burglar on order "don't move" curses, threatens to kill. Homeowner shoots and kills burglar. Mock jurors were presented with standard prosecution/defense arguments. Study was to check effect of weapon used on juror opinion. Six weapon choices were used, including AR-15 and Mini-14. Verdict of guilty of manslaughter was 65% if AR-15 was used, 45% if Mini-14 was used. If found guilty, AR-15 users got 7 to 9 years, versus ~2.5 years for Mini-14 users. The jurors were selected from Texas college students.

What was the conviction rate when they "just fired the shotgun through the door" :uhoh:

Does pointing out that a bolt action rifle isn't a semi-auto rifle mean that I'm implying that a law banning semi-auto rifles is justified?

People don't complain about the term "assault rifle" because they are concerned with technical accuracy.

Since I'm the author of the study - and well aware of the bias, that has convinced me that playing the sporting rifle game plays towards accepting the bias and also the appearance of the gun in media news will wash away the euphemism.

I prefer the strong defense of why we can own them for 2nd Amend. reasons and if used in SD - I feel that a skilled lawyer (aware of the issues) can inform the reason to have such a gun (not that it is a nice gun). I have one and shoot it and trained with it - so I'd better be able to tell that story if God forbid I use it. I didn't train with it as a sporting arm.
