I bought a Stag arms lower, DPMS lower kit and an A2 solid stock several years ago. finally got around to assembling the parts. Everything went well until I tried to tighten the Buttstock screw. It was the wrong thread pattern. I was told that I needed an A4 buttstock screw. the threads matched, but when the screw is tightened all the way down there is play between the buttstock and lower receiver. What am I missing? Any help would be appreciated.

There should be a spacer on the end of the buffer tube for an A2 stock. The A2 also uses a longer screw to make up that length difference that the spacer represents. An A1 stock uses the same buffer tube, but without the spacer and with a shorter screw. It sounds like you may have an A1 stock and using the spacer and A2 length screw? Is the gap about 5/8" between the front of the stock and the rear of the receiver?

If using the shorter A1 stock but the longer A2 screw, the end of the screw sticking through too far may damage the buffer as its fired.

I may have misunderstood your meaning, if the above didn't apply, is the stock touching the receiver, but just wont snug up with the screw tight? If so, the threads may be damaged in the buffer tube? They do usually have some thread locker applied to the threads to help keep them tight, if the stock isn't snug, perhaps it just needs a bit more torque?

The A2 buttstock screw thread pattern did not match. I ordered an A4 screw and it fit, but bottoms out before the stock snugs up to the receiver. The play between the stock and receiver is about 1/8th of an inch.

Put 2 or 3 washers on the screw - it's bottoming out. If it still won't snug down the threads are boogered.

Easy fix then, you need to remove 1/8th inch+ from the screw.

Stop by a hardware store and buy a couple of nuts that fit the bolt. When you get home screw the nuts on the bolt, then use a file to remove the excess metal from the end of the bolt. Taking off the nuts should clean up the threads on the bolt.

This video should give you the general idea.

Just make sure the assembly is tight after you shorten and screw in it together. Too short is no bueno.
