Letters of marque and sending Marines against pirates obstructing the flow of American-owned goods?
Well, you seem to have forgotten the Naval fleets too..

But, let's restate your argument... Sending the Navy around the world to kill some people to protect the price of goods is okay, but using the military to counter an aggressive hostile nation intent on invading yours and killing your citizens is bad.. uh.. okay. Sure there...

But, in your strategic view, is it possible for an island nation to sustain, for any practical length of time, a substantial wartime production when its supply and raw materials ships are constantly destroyed by a vastly superior navy, while they are both coming and going along their supply and material routes?
Ah yes, the counter option to dropping the bomb and forcing a fast surrender.. starving them out.

Because of course starving millions of Japanese to death is much more morally superior to killing 100,000 or so.

Yes, yes.. I know the lame retort that is coming already.. "but they were about to surrender" No they weren't. They were training their women and children how to foul tank treads by laying under them and how to charge machine gun nests with pointy sticks. They even staged a coup attempt to keep the emperor from surrendering. They were fanatical. Surrender wasn't an option until cities started disappearing.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki were hit for no other reasons than a sadistic, glorious grand finale to 5 years of American military and civilian frustration, and to scare the tar out of the Russians.
And that they were both very active military production and command cities... but hey, why would we want to let history get in the way of your delusion.
