Clothing, I am speaking of nice clothes here folks.

Most folks go shoot or take training in comfy clothes , footwear, and such. How many men have worn a sports coat, suit, 3 pc suit, with leather soled shoes to shoot in?

Ladies, well skirts , dresses, evening gowns, are not what most train in either.

So we had another one of those "Impromtu Shooting" days.

Now Thrift Stores are great for getting clothes to shoot in for training, especially if you want to shoot that snubby from a coat pocket, be it a light jacket, sports coat, overcoat, or in my case, I was wearing tails, threadbare, still tails is tails.

Footwear makes a lot of difference, for instance in shotgunning having a bit of "lift" that put shooter a "bit forward" and gets the weak foot more on "ball" of foot is good. Stance differs in flat shoes and for the ladies wearing various heels .

Leather soles, are slippery, ladies heels can get caught and break not only affecting shooting...also moving, and evading.

Even though a serious matter, we have a bit of fun. Guys shot first, in our Thrift Formals, tails for instance actually are cut better to get the coat back to access CCW. Again using the tip to add a bit of weight to a coat, assists.
I later pinned a fishing sinker to see...

Gals just had to razz a bit, and try to distract, said being as I had on "tails" I needed a Top hat, poster board stapled togehter then stuck on my ugly straw hat ...okay it didn't match, doubt I'll ever wear a top hat, still, I can shoot wearing a top hat if I ever need be.

They fired up ZZTop "Sharp Dressed Man" while I and the guys were shooting.

Lessons learned by the gals watching us guys . Other matters too..including paybacks.

Ladies turn: WE have the worlds' ugliest dress, with pockets, mini-skirt with white blouse and penny loafers. Evening dress, low cut, slit up the side "to here" , high heels, and obviously been rode hard and put up wet. Add the Business suit, cross b/t mafia, and zoot suit cut...wide lapels and wide stripes, it was a ladies, I saw the tag, would have sworn it had to be a guys, what do you expect for $7. Not sure you call them shoes, hurt my feet just looking at them.

The gals start and Evening dress has already busted a heel and gets style points for "kicking them heels off quick" to move , scoot and shoot. Good thing she had a T shirt on, low cut evening dresses attract brass, by the way.

I'm a Redneck Women" , gets cranked, there is something about the way gals look at you when you do that, especially with loaded guns...

Good sports. Lots learned, and educational about wearing nicer clothes and having to shoot.

Evening dress got additional style points on having a Beretta Jetfire in a thigh holster, folks can bash the .25 all they want...

Her little "purse" J frames fit, with a speed strip too.

Mini-skirt had her a NAA mini revolver on a chain around her neck, did a nice job of shooting while on the ground to get an attacker off.

Dress, two pockets mean a J frame in one, extra speed loader in the other.

Ladies business suit afforded best conceament and mobility, she was wearing "old lady" soft soled , leather top shoes. Think older librarian lady look.

Handgun, rifles and shotguns were shot. Just thinking outside the box, and keeping that thinking trained was all.

Ladies have guys beat on kicking out of bad shoes and running in stockings, socks too...

Might be something worthwhile to do, Thrift Store clothes to replicate nice or even Formal attire.

We "coupled up" to replicate being out and about with various outfits, who knows when an occasion will call for certain attire, couples should communicate in getting ready for various events.

For instance, if the lady is wearing a little black dress, might be smart for the male to have her CCW on weak side, she will know to keep your strong side free, and could access if need. Then again can she shoot your strong side gun, if you the male were shot, meaning you had to use her gun from your weak side? Teamwork, planning ahead, outside the box.

One never knows...

Excelent idea! I never would of thought of doing that.

However let me the first to say we need pictures(like of the miniskirt, evening gown and the like:evil: :D )

Interesting. Footwear makes a huge difference. I'd imagine it's especially important for ladies to know the difference between shooting in jeans & sneakers vs. skirt & heels. Good post. :)

Great Idea,

I have thought about going to the range straight after work, all suited and booted, but never got round to it, ( don't really fancy brass burns on a £500 suit)

I'm going to suggest this in my Practical club, shame we don't have any lady members:(

I have. The first time it was just because I went to the range right from work. In those days I wore a suit every day*. I found out how slippery leather soled dress shoes are and how confining the shoulders of a suit jacket can be. Since then I make a point to practice so attired on occasion.

Partice with what you carry. Practice in what you usually wear.

*No longer. Today I am sitting at my desk in a large downtown law firm wearing a Hawaiian shirt and light color twill pants. This is normal summertime "business casual" for me. This is not firm policy, but all of us in the IP group are renegades.

Excellent idea!
I'm lucky to get to one class per year, so haven't been to a ton of training, but I'm always surprised to see how people are dressed. Or more specifically, how they are dressed around the gun.

I always wear what I wear daily, and would think that most others would also. They don't.

The first class I went to was more oriented to non-LEOs than others I've had. Therefore, anyone in that class who would carry a gun would have to carry it concealed in our state.
But I was the only one in my class of approx 20 students who shot from concealment. I thought that a class would be an ideal time to work out what worked and what didn't when it came to one's chosen daily concealment setup. But I was apprently mistaken there.
Maybe people are afraid of looking bad. Getting tangled in a covering garment or something.

Other classes I've taken had a student mix of LEO and non-LEO. Some of the LEOs will use their "tactical gear"- Safariland 6004 thigh holster, lots of nylon, velcro, etc. That I can see, because they actually use it.
But as the non-LEOs go, if I totaled up all the ones who have shot from concealment over all the classes, I can count them on one hand.

Thanks folks.

I "had" a reply with some other information, I am having computer problems [modem] and lost connection. Using a borrowed laptop now...

Anyway the reply was about how Cooper mentioned "comforting not comfortable" and "dressing around the gun".

We took this and other Trainers "lessons" from , Clint Smith,Ayoob, Cirillo, Farnham, Givens, Awerbuck, Cain, Marty & Gila Hayes, LEO and Miltary folks...etc., and come up with things to do on our own to learn, share, and practice.

Competitions and Training continue no matter the weather. For J.Q. Public with a CCW, how many have had "nice clothes" and gone out to shoot with Umbrella in one hand, wearing a raincoat?

It is one thing to do this on a dry day, do this when it is actually is raining. One gets wet, guns get wet, visibility is different...etc. Can you shoot thru raindrops on your glasses?
Competed too many years myself, focus, and shoot "thru the drops". Smears can impede "seeing" and one cannot shoot what they cannot "see".

Do this in nice clothes [Thrift Store] in the rain and see how/ what you do in exiting / getting into a vehicle, pushing a shopping cart, a good one is , carrying a child in arms, and the child in arms.

Leathere sole are more slippery, and the gals that kicked off shoes, socks are WET, and hose that tear/ run get all ...well think about it.

One finds out about gear, such as stocks when shooting guns wet. How much noise some raingear makes - like evading and not wanting to give yourself away.

The wind has been known to blow a target "down", one of the first times this happened, hapened to a lady, she was drawning her weapon and coming up to target, target went down , and she evaded to cover. "Threat was not a threat anymore".

So this stuff while we do shoot, is also about NOT shooting, , about evading , engaging a target, but one can survive without shooting.

Also "gear" choices such a rubber soles shoes that look nice with nicer clothes, afford traction, and "quiet" in evading....or do yours squeak? Also better/ easier operate umbrellas, easier to carry, to open and to close, and using the umbrella to fend off and attacker (retention position).

Also get a box and pretend it is the ATM machine, walk up or drive up.

We use water pistols often times when using personal vehicles, as each person's is different.

One guy noticed with a tie his seat belt gets hung up sometimes, has decided to put tie inside shirt while driving, so if in getting out of vehicle, and approached at that instance, his tie will not impede any defensive measures.

Formally thinking out of the box.
