About to start reloading 10mm, Anything I should know?

Hello THR,

For those who do or have reloaded 10mm, I would like to ask what is/was your take on it? Im going to be reloading for a Glock 29 SF. I went and done a little research on some other forums and noticed that people like to use Power Pistol, Blue Dot, 2400 ( who knew? ) and some of the AA powders.

Is there anything I should be concerned about? It is a Gen 3 with the double recoil spring in it.

I use AA9 & 180/200 gr bullets. If you're going lighter maybe AA7.

You should be concerned about running too hot on the unsupported Glock barrel.
 
I've been loading 150 grain bullets from either Hornady or Nosler and using 6.1 grains of Bullseye (near the max in the manual I use).

They shoot great, are accurate enough for what I'm doing, and recoil is mild. I'm shooting a Colt Delta Elite so the gun is probably heavier than your Glock so you might notice more recoil.

Save as much brass as you can would be my advice...that stuff ain't cheap.

I load 10mm more than any other pistol cartridge these days. If you're looking to work with potent loads, do get an aftermarket barrel. Even if your Glock barrel is "safe" with heavy loads, your brass will thank you.

Storm Lake barrels are superior to Lone Wolf and don't cost a whole lot more.

I've found that you can get a bit more velocity from Longshot than from Power Pistol, but I use both. Both of them meter great in my 650.

If you're going to start pushing bullets seriously fast, make sure they're meant to go that fast. Lead and plated can be iffy.

Im using FMJ bullets. No lead or plated.

I have some TMJ which I believe is Speer and I also have some Gold Dot bullets.
A few Hydra Shoks. All bullets are pulled. Got plenty of manuals available.

Any real difference from the Storm Lake barrel to the KKM barrel?
I don't want the Lone Wolf barrel after watching hat Hicock45 Video where his accuracy decreased because of that.

I noticed Blue Dot in most manuals are giving high performance but am a bit skeptical about using Blue Dot. I did make up some test rounds but am thinking of switching to either Power Pistol, AutoComp or maybe W-231
 
Until you get to Bar-Sto, you're not going to do better than Storm Lake.

I use 231/HP38 for mild loads in 10mm. If you're after the full-power loads, you won't love it. Use Longshot or PP (or AA9) for nice-metering powders that really move bullets.

From what I understand, you might get a few more fps with 800X, but it needs to be hand-weighed.

It might go without saying, but don't chamber the same rounds over and over again--or at least measure for bullet setback if you do. In .45 Auto, a little bullet setback can be unimportant. In hot 10mm, it can be a disaster.
 
I use BD and AA7. Be careful with the Hornady 7th edition data. The 8th reduced the AA7 loads tremendously. I killed some brass with these loads. I have the 20SF and I ended up putting the lone wolf BBL in it. Love the pistol but it is a potent load. I really enjoy shooting the 150gr mid level plinkers.
 
Good advice has been given on the Glocks---if you load up to full power you'll likely have to throw the brass away after one loading because it will be bulged like a pregnant guppy and unsafe to ever shoot again. The Glock feed rsmps are cut for reliability at the sacrifice of case support.

I'm loading a 200gr cast for my max loads and I have found I'm running out of room in the case with AA#9 but just barely have room for a max load of Blue Dot.
 
Blue Dot is a good choice for high power loads if you like a lot of Flash. It doesn't do well with weak or mid range loads.

Power pistol is another High flash powder in the 10mm, not for me.

For high power loads I use Longshot, fast or faster than BD with less flash and will still do well at Min loads.

AA #7 and #9 are also excellent in the 10mm, but my all around favorite for range work is Ramshot Silhouette.
 
Longshot or PP for full tilt, a better supported barrel, and work up while watching for issues that would either shorten brass life, and, or, indicate excessive pressures.

231 / HP38 and other fast burning powders are not intended for building typical full performing loads, especially so with heavier bullets.

Blue Dot will push them to typical 10mm velocities, but there are other better choices in regard to pressure management, again Longshot and PP are easier to manage with.

Looks like I may put Blue Dot on the back burner for a while and go to Power Pistol or W-231. I just want to get a feel for the at the moment before going to 10mm hot loads.

In that time, I will be saving up for that barrel.
 
Longshot and 800X are good choices for accurate full power loads. I had a 29SF and while I cant remember what I used for a target load, I think my SD/HD loads were done with 800X.

On a side note, RMR bullets (longdayjake) has 180gr FMJ in stock at a very nice price.
 
800X works well for high power loads, but it meters like Corn Flakes. I'm not a fan of weighing each and every pistol charge, so 800X is out for me. YMMV
 
I like AA#9 for my "higher" pressure loads that have the case capacity,it burns nice and clean. I haven't used AA#7,but it should work the same. Blue Dot lets you know you fired something good,aka flash/bang.
 
10mm is my favorite load to do. Right now I'm doing them for about $9 for 50rds which is great because they just jacked up the price to nearly $30 for 50rds around here for them. I've used AA7, AA9, W231, Bluedot, Longshot, and 800X for my handloads. Haven't tried out the PowerPistol or HP38 yet though.

If I'm making a powderpuff round, I like using W231 and a light bullet. Meters like water and they shoot like a 9mm.

Wasn't a big fan of 800X though, didn't meter well, and also a very dirty powder. Longshot can get you some nice speed.

AA7, AA9, and bluedot make some nice big loads too, but I've run out of case capacity with them on some loads.

If I was to recommend a start I would say a light bullet with W231 loaded in the middle of the range. You should have no problem with metering, plenty of case capacity left that even if you do have a little setback it won't be an issue, and shooting it will be pleasant. My cases also don't seem as beat up with W231 loads compared with other powders.
 
For light to medium power loads it's hard to beat Universal in the 10mm. I found W231 to leave a lot of unburned powder.
I had a KKM .40 conversion barrel in my Glock 29. Super accurate and reliable. Beautifully machined, a very smooth bore. Yes, worth the money.
 
Well, I do have about half a pound of Universal.
Guess Im gonna give that and Power Pistol a try in the 10mm
 
Unless you're going to be hunting with your 29sf, or unless you're the kind of guy who likes to "turn heads at the range," then why would you be concerned...ever....with nuclear loads? Nuclear loads in 10mm are inferior, in my humble opinion, to "regular" loads, for s.d. purposes. I load and shoot a lot of 10mm...just got in another 1000 pcs of brass, and I just consider 10mm another choice, not really different from .45acp, 9mm, etc. I shoot a G29 and G20. I use a Lonewolf barrel with the G20, because I've never watched a YouTube of Hickock 45, and because I get more reloads out of my brass with the LW barrel than with the Glock factory barrel.

I've never seen a smiley or bulge in any of my brass, and all my brass is shot through Glocks. ;)

Amen to that statement. I read somewhere that the old Norma factory load that pushes a 200gr JHP @ 1200fps is too strong for any brand of 10mm handgun.

I shot 180gr Rem JHP over 10.? gr of Blue Dot and felt it was too strong for my Glk 21SF.
