Absolutely GREAT pump action shotguns.

Maybe they are curious about the guns and wanted to hear about them. We Kommiefornians are in the same boat when we read about all your EBRs and SBRs and what it's like to be free citizens.

Yeah notorious I'm in that same boat here in Illinois but most everything else is legal here. Don't know, you probably answered my questions, but I would like to hear what they say.

But unlike California where it's a whole socialist state, for you guys it's just the Chicago area and some cities, right? The State of Illinois is still pretty free, no?

Um during the election when they had like the map with blue and red states and they zoomed in on Cali all of the state not on the coast was solid red. Yeah with us it's pretty much Chicago screwing us over on most everything. Illinois is sorta free. You have to get a license to touch a gun, granted all you need is a clean nose but still it is a pain and pretty much registration of owners. We have a 24 hour long gun wait and a 48 hour handgun waiting period. No have zero (0) concealed carry. No NFA items, the cops can't even have silencers we're so restricted. There is no AW ban or high cap ban but still when it comes to guns I wish I didn't live here. You should read one of my other posts about how I think Illinois should have a co-consul executive like in the Roman Republic. The difference would be instead of a Plebian and a Patrician it would be someone from Chicago and someone from "downstate" I'll try to find that for you later.

It's okay, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento set the liberal agenda for the whole state with big government and welfare. Not that they are all anti-gun, but they do love their government dole.

I am not surprised we are $40B in the hole now and we are not getting out of it, ever, the way this is going.

throdgrain I have a question for you. What bring you here to the High Road, it's obviously focused on American laws and such. Are there really no forums in the UK? I'm just curious.

We have forums in the UK, some pretty busy, like www.airgunbbs.com (I know it's called airgun but it has a large shotgun and firearm section, plus a big off topic section for like minded people) and pigeonwatch, which is more dedicated to field sports. There's American people who post on AGBBS, it's a small world these days.

You have a section for American Laws and such, you may notice I never post there, it doesnt concern me , except in passing interest.

I post 99% in the shotgun section, because I happen to like pump action and semi auto shotguns, and for pump actions there is no better resource than your country. Whilst there are some people like me in this country who like pumps, the vast majority of shooters prefer over/unders, so if I need info about a Remington 870, I'm not going to ask them am I ? :)

I own a Benelli M2, a Remington 870 and a Mossberg 500, so I hope we're allowed semi autos and pumps as they are all on my licence here in merry ol England .......

Yeah I read British forums for British stuff like hunting and clay pigeon stuff, the U.S forum for mostly pump actions. I like posting on forums and chatting about shooting, and it's nice to talk to people from another country , see how they percieve things, it's often very different from how we look at things.

And to be honest some of the things you guys think go on in Britain are so far off the mark it's amazing, just as no doubt some of the things people over here think of you are just the same :)

Since you asked, I will offer my opinion. The Winchester Model 12 to me is as fine a shotgun as I ever picked up. In 1961/62 I shot a Field Grade Model 12 to shoot Trap and even shot one event in Madrid Spain of Olympic Trap where you get two shots (if needed) at each target and I broke more than one with the second shot. Another little beauty is the Winchester Model 42 which is a .410 gauge and looks like a miniature Model 12.

The Winchester Model 12 is by far the best production pump shotgun.

could there be some crazy expensive custom guns out there that may be better? ya, but it would be a close fight.

the Ithaca Model 37 is also a great design, id rank it a solid 2nd to the Model 12

Like they say:

Rem 870
Win 12, 1200, or 1300 (the 1300 being the most modern incarnation)
Browning BPS
Ithaca 37
Mossberg 500, 500A, or 590

The Savage and the Marlin are classics, but not made any more, so not a "modern classic", I suppose. Don't think the Ithaca is made any more either, is it?

I'm a Winchester guy, so I'm partial to model twelves. That being said, there is very little to choose between the Ithaca 37, the Mossberg 500, the Remington 870, and the model twelve. They are all first quality pumpguns and all have their own particular followings. I hope you enjoy collecting them all.

I'd recommend the Mossberg 590 version. It has a nice cap on the magazine tube that you can unscrew and remove the spring for cleaning. With the 500, you have to unscrew the tube from the receiver. I've got a Mariner model, but I'm on the lookout to add the six shot mil model.

Thanks for all the replies folks. I think my list at the moment is as follows -

Remington 870 Wingmaster

Mossberg 500

Benelli SuperNova

Ithaca 37

Winchester 1300

Browning BPS

In thats order. I have the first two, so as funds allow a Benelli is next on the list :) :D

wow wow wow, the Benelli Nova deserves a place there just as much as the SuperNova or any other gun currently produced.
