I have an AR-15 with an Eotech sight on it with a 1 MOA Red Dot and I am wondering what those who have shot one expect the accuracy of a ten shot group to be?

Would a scope provide better accuracy?

Is there a better set up that would provide better accuracy?

And please use 100 yards as your standard.

Thanks for any input.

It is a Colt with Match upper and lower and is a .223. I have shot Hornady 75 grain, hand loads with Speer 68 Gr bullets and another 75 grain bullet and oh by the way the barrel is 1:7 twist.

Ok here are 5 targets of which four of them have ten shot groups. Top left is Hornady 75 grain ammo, center is handload using varget, 68 gr speer, and the other two are an off brand 75 grain, all of these are match ammo.

the handload bullet weight only has some bearing on accuracy. What matters is your powder choice and charge. With only that information you gave, I have no idea how accurate you can expect it to be. But the hornady 75 grainers should be about as good as it gets from a factory loaded round.

another factor on your accuracy is how good you are with the Eotech/rifle combo, the stability of your shooting position, and the wind. Just because the wind is only a 3mph crosswind at the muzzle doesn't mean it's still 3mph downrange.

if you have a target that lets you get a decent sight picture (i.e. you're not just guessing at the middle of an IPSC silhouette or something), 2 MOA is reasonable. 3 is more likely. (ETA i made my guess before he posted pics of his targets)

Thanks Taliv, I am getting about 3" now and was hoping for more like one inch but I see your point about the targets. I think if I had a 1" target to focus on I might be able to tighten up the groups.

np, try turning the brightness down. but mostly you need to figure out a way to get the exact same sight picture every time. for example, if you have the reticle with the 65 MOA ring around it... maybe you could put two target stands 65" apart and center the reticle between them.

of course, that's a lot of work to compensate for using the wrong tool :) If small groups is your goal, get rid of the eotech and put a scope or precision iron sights on it.
Use the eotech for putting 2 rounds on an IPSC target at 20' in .2 seconds.

Are you asking what you should expect from your setup as it is with the Eotech or are you asking what the accuracy capability of the rifle is? If you're talking about the setup, it will only shoot as accurately as you can with that sight. If you're real good, maybe 2 to 3" with good ammunition.

If you are talking about the capabilities of the rifle, I've seen Colt Match models shoot sub MOA for ten shots. Try some Sierra Match Kings. Either 69 or 77gr over a load of either Varget or Reloader 15.

Guys thank you for all the responses. I want to clarify my question. First let me say I really like the Eotech. It is easy to use and I simply love the quick target acquisition. What I want to know is what I should expect to shoot with it when it comes to groups at 100 yards. I realize I did not present this well in the original post.

What can YOU expect to shoot with it? I don't know. How good are your eyes? How good is your trigger control?

If you have nothing better to do, maybe you might try putting some high power glass on top of the rifle and find out what it is capable of in the hands of a good shooter, then see how close you can get to that with your Eotech.

Forgive me, but EOTECH's are not for precision shooting, they are for CQB in which center of mass is the objective. Based on your targets that is what you are getting.

BTW, I don't see anything at all wrong with those groups you are shooting. I've seen worse out at the range from guys shooting scoped rifles off of a rest. It looks to me like you shoot pretty well. Still, if you want to see what the rifle can do, you're gonna need some magnification. Either that or put it in a vice that won't let the rifle move.

I have the EOTech 552-A65/1 with the circle and dot. Shooting for fun at 100 yards, the dot pretty much obliterates a 4" circle. Nevertheless, I'm able to put approximately 90% of my shots inside a 4" circle at 100 yards shooting cheap, Russian, steel casing ammo.

It's like doing finish carpentry with a chainsaw though. :)
