I was in a gunshop I had never been to before today, and I picked up a couple 50rd boxes of the Aguila Super Colibri powderless primer fired ammo. I had heard of it but I'd never seen or tried it before. I just thought it might be interesting and I was curious just how quiet it was. I normally can not shoot at my property due to neighbors being very close and such, but I can get away with something like a pellet gun and I had heard this ammo was comparable in sound. So I took it outside and set up a little target at about 20 feet or so to just try a round or two to see what it was all about. The first thing I noticed was that it's a bit louder than I expected from reports I had seen in earlier posts here. I should note here that I was using a Beretta Neos 6 inch pistol. I fired three rounds before deciding it was too loud to be using out there, but I noticed something odd. At as short a range of 20 feet, all my shots seemed to drop considerably. The fact is I couldn't tell if this was normal (though I thought not) having never tried it before. I wasn't sure how much power this primer only ammo had to propel the 20 grain lead.. but I imagined it should be accurate at 20 feet, or else why would they make it at all ? I was using a fairly low end red dot sight on the gun, and it hadn't been fired for some time, so it could well be that it needed to be sighted in again. I really couldn't fire enough rounds, and certainly not my normal 22lr ammo , to get a feel for whether this was true.

So any experiences with this unusual ammo ? Accuracy reports at short and longer ranges ?

Yes, it (Aquilla Super Colibri) is still loud out of a pistol (I think loud enough to require muffs). Out of a rifle, it sounds like a pellet gun and is accurate enough out to 20 yards or so. I have heard the company doesn't recommend their use in rifles (although there are no warnings printed on the box) because of the fear of a bullet sticking in the bore, but I believe the majority of this ammo is shot through long guns. I have decided to shoot it from my shorter .22 rifles and have had no problems.

fired in my

Enfield trainer with a 25 inch bbl, you can hear the firing pin strike, the bullet makes more noise hitting the target than the gun going off.

The 'Super Colibri' ammo is louder, and more powerful, than the regular Colibri rounds. The regular stuff is harder to find. Both are much quieter when fired from rifles.

Your point of aim will be lower, but accuracy at 20 feet is usually pretty good - certainly enough to stay within a nickel-sized group.

One caution- Clean after each use. The priming material is not as clean and is hydroscopic and if you don't clean it will harm your barrel. I found out the hard way.

It is very accurate for the less than 20 yards between my dining room window and the bird feeders. That is why I have shot nealy 300 red squirrels over the past 5-6 years without bothering the neighbors. Four this past week.
