If your background is primarily a slug gun, I think I'd be for thinking 300 yards and under, at least until you've put out 200 or 300 rounds in field conditions. Once a rifle is sighted in, the benchrest is a waste of time, money and wear and tear on the rifle.
I dunno. I had a few busy years of rifle shooting behind me before I started feeling comfortable about shots outside of 250 yards or so.
