What are some of the most accurate rounds these days? I am wanting to build a custom rifle, mostly just for shooting. might want to take it prairie dogin' so I do not want a big bore gun. (under .30) Any suggestions? (and yes i reload)

A cartridge is only as accurate as the rifle. Any custom rifle should be accurate (depending on your definition of accuracy). There are a ton of choices from 17 Remington to 25-06 that will suit your needs.

6mm BR is a great small caliber round...only for reloaders, but it works for you. Also look into .243, .260, and 6.5G (for a AR pattern) as they offer similar performance. :)

In general, more accurate factory ammo is made in the .22 centerfire varmint calibers, or the 6.5 & .30 caliber match ammo.

Most of the larger hunting calibers are more concerned with bullet performance then ultimate accuracy.

It will be harder to make a 25-06 or 7mm Mag shoot really tight groups then to make a 22-250 or .223 shoot tiny groups.

It's just the nature of the beast.

6.5x284 Win has been a favorite of 600-1000 yard benchrest shooters. But many are switching to other 6.5mm cartridges these days.

I can't remember the URL, but search for the 6mm BR site. They have loads of info there.

The only problem with a 6.5x284 is short barrel life, and recoil is up there with the 270 depending on load. If you want a dog gun it would be a ways down the list of exceptable cartridges for me.
I`d look at a 22 or 6mm caliber round. Both can be extreemly accurate and will drop P-dogs or yotes to a long long way out. Keep in mind for paper or varmites the range is usually known, or can be found with a range finder. If you know the rifle you can adjust for it easily and drop isn`t a real big problem. Wind is every cartridges enemy though.....

There is no such thing as an accurate cartridge.

There are only such things as precision manufacturing, and consistency.

for your needs, go .204 Ruger. Factory ammo is both plentiful and accurate. Around here, your only choices are Hornady and Winchester supreme. Both of those loads shot 3/4" groups from my stock CZ 527 American when using the set trigger.

No doubt. People get so hung up over "inherent accuracy" they forget that shooting skill is everything.

The equipment, ammunition and your shooting skill are all determining factors. It takes all of them to consitantly shoot well. When you take any one of the three out of the equation the accuracy is going to suffer.

With that said, there are many choices in .22, .243's to choose from for the low recoiling calibers. Stepping it up a notch you have the .257,.264, .277 and .284's.
Just off the top of my head the little .223 Rem comes to mind. Not at all finicky, cheap and brass is abundant to load for. You could go with the improved version and a fast twist barrel and have a great longer range varminter. If going with a custom barrel, leave plenty of straight shank on the barrel so you can set the barrel back if needed.

Yea thanks guys i am actually looking more at the 6mm area due to better BC. ( already have a 22-250). I just did not know if there were any newer wildcat rounds out there that have sparked peoples attention.
