I am currently active duty military on terminal leave. I will officially be off of active duty in May of this year. I have been stationed in Georgia for the last 4 years, and although I am an Ohio resident, I have legally purchased handguns in Georgia during my time in service with a copy of my orders placing me in Georgia and my military ID. Although I still live in Georgia, I am still an Ohio resident. Do I need to take my handguns back to Ohio before my ETS date, or can I keep them in Georgia since I purchased them legally here in Georgia? Thanks for your help.

You can take/possess them anywhere that handuns are legal to be possessed. 47-48 states would be all fine and legal....New York and New Jersey come to mind as not.

Without a recognized permit, you will no longer be eligible to carry the handguns loaded in Georgia like you are now under the military exception to Georgia's carry law.

BTW: after a certain period of time residing in Georgia after your ETS date, Georgia law will require you to obtain a Georgia driver's license.

You should also plan on getting GA license plates for your POV, lest the locals perceive you as a Yankee carpet bagger. (It is also the law, once you reach your ETS).

Correct about New York (can not possess a handgun without a state-issued pistol permit), but as far as NJ, perfectly legal to bring any legally-owned handgun with you while moving into the state - no permits, no registration required.

Perhaps you meant Illinois instead of NJ.

You trying to get someone thrown in a cage? Since when does NJ not require registration or a permit?

Did you even bother to read any of the NJ firearms statutes before accusing me of providing false information?

Hint: 2C:39-6e. Read it.

NJ requires a permit to purchase but none to possess and there is no mandatory gun registration as Tom said.

Well regular guy congradulations on your service to our country. Good luck with your future plans.
So are you going back to Ohio or staying in Georga? Make sure you use the benefits you've earned over the last four years.

Regular Guy, Congrats. I retired 22 years ago as a E-9 1st Sgt. If you had asked me, as a 1st Sgt, I would have directed you to the post JAG. But, I'm thinking that if you are going to remain in Georgia then you will have to give up your Ohio residency after retirement. Some states require vehicles, drivers lic, etc be changed with in "so" many days of being "in state". Your local motor vehicle dept probably can answer that as well. Again, get these legal questions answered by the legal authorities. What are your after military plans?
