My father, a Congregational preacher, has always given me great advice about dealing with people. I don't always apply it correctly, but it has helped my otherwise abrasive self.

One of his points: "you need to phrase things in the terms your listener would think of, because if you put things into your terms, you already have a barrier between the listener and you."

That said, I was out by the campus gymnasium hustling folks off the sidewalk to come in to the UT range to try out some shooting. I see a young kid walk by with the boots, punk-rock T-shirt, mohawk, etc. So I give him my sales pitch as he walks by.

He doesn't give much response, so as he passes, I say "Hey man, are you gonna be ready when the revolution comes?"

He turns, stares me down, and says "Are you just talking revolution, or do you really believe in it?"

Me: "If a country goes downhill far enough, there _will_ be a revolution to correct it. When that happens, you want to be ready, right? Everybody should have the medical knowledge to fix themself, the mechanical knowledge to fix their gear, and the means for self-defense. Since firearms are the best means of self-defense, it's something that everybody should know."

So we talked about it a bit, we'll see if he gets curious enough to show up.

Anyone have any tips on gearing your message to your audience? Or good object-lesson stories about failing to gear your message to the audience?
