I am sort of thinking about adding a hi-viz front site with fiberoptic insert to my J frame. How do those hold up long term?

Should I send it to S&W for that, or is there someone better or does it matter?

Do you have a newer one with a pinned-in front sight?
Or an older one with a ramp sight milled as part of the barrel?

The first is a simple swap.

The second is a complicated milling machine operation.
Or another sight could be pinned over the modified sight already there.

I don't know if S&W will do it, but I doubt it.

Glad you asked Balrog. I've been thinking the same thing. My 60-4 target has the pinned front sight. I'd have to use the SW1002 which is rough .25 high. That would put the fiber at the height of the red insert. It looks to be just a matter of drilling the new sight with a #54 drill bit. I believe the statement that they are resin overmolded means that the fiber is protected by a resin 'cover'. I would think they'd be pretty tough but I'd like to hear from folks that have used them.

If you have to mill your sight, check out Hamilton Bowen's front sight conversion for the J-frames. I had it done to my 442 and the difference is amazing. It is not inexpensive, but well worth the money.
