After three years my bifocal prescription just wasn't cutting it any more so I had a visit with my eye doctor. After all the measurements and testing he asked if there was anything else I was interested in and I explained that having my upper lens able to focus on the front sight of a handgun would certainly be dandy.
He told me that shouldn't be a problem and I went on to explain how I help teach people to shoot and that I'd adopted point shooting partially to help compensate for my degrading vision. This sparked some interest from him and his tech and gave me a chance to discuss the merits by illustrating with a young mother we'd had in a 2 day course that had become very fast and very accurate at defensive pistol ranges.
While selecting new glasses the tech brought the question of shooting up and we had a great conversation about fitting a handgun and safety and training. We also discussed fitting a shotgun for skeet shooting (not my strong suite, but I've listened to SM enough to be able to sound smarter than a stump on the issue). I told her that if she or anyone else she knew wanted to learn basic safe handling and shooting of handguns I'd be happy to help.
While I was checking out she asked what I charged and I told her "Nothing. It's my pleasure to teach people to shoot safely and my way of getting more people into the sport.". She asked if she could bring someone else along and I told her "As many as you like. Just have everyone bring a box of 9mm or .45 and we'll make an afternoon of it."
I hope that she gets all the techs from the office as well as her friends interested.
