I will soon be buying my first 1911. It is my intention to get opinions here about brands/models later, but as I look over the possibilities some of the guns I am considering have adjustable sights.
I have other carry guns which will go with me much more often, but I want to carry the 1911 on occasion.
Is it a big deal to have adjustable sights on a carry gun as far as ease of draw, snagging etc. or am I worrying about nothing? Thanks, Jim

Hi Jim,
Most people prefer fixed sights on a carry gun for reasons of simplicity and ruggedness.
I have two 1911s that I carry on occaision and they both have adjustable sights. They have caused me some minor issues, but I am planning on replacing them with fixed versions as soon as money will allow. The negative of the adjustable sight is that it can lose zero, pins can come out, and it can be tampered with. The pro to the adjustable sight is that you can adjust the sights to your preferred load.
Fixed sights are are tough, and if installed correctly , they wont budge. There is less to go wrong with fixed sights. The negative to fixed sights is that they are fixed and connot be adjusted to specific loads of ammunition. I hope this helps you.

Thanks Sapper, I feel stupid asking some of the questions I have, but I have only shot a 1911 once and I don't want to buy something I don't like and regret it.

Hi Jim,

Sapper771 covered your question very well.

You want to avoid anything that might snag in your clothing if you need to present your pistol in a self defense situation.

Generally speaking, adjustable sights tend to be bigger than combat sights.

I'm currently carrying a concealed pistol with no sights.

This Colt New Agent.

(Actually it does have have trench sights, which have been easy for me to get used to.)

Good luck with your new purchase -- keep us updated on your progress!

i do not agree with having adjustable sights on a carry gun/a fighting gun. they are great for competition/ gun games, personally i have no need or desire for adjustable sights on a carry gun.

The adjustable autoloader sights I've seen are larger and sharper than fixed. These could damage clothing (e.g., suit jacket liners) or cut your hand when racking the slide quickly. Their only real advantage is that you can precisely and easily zero your sights for your eyes and chosen load.
