Advice on 9mm sought....

Ok, I am just thinking about trading my Walther PPS in 40 S& W for a 9 mm.

My ideal pistol would look like this:

9 mm.
High capacity double stack but not overly fat for smaller hand.
DA/SA.
Ambidexterious safety. (or safety for right handed shooter)
Decocker.
Chamber loaded indicator.
Stainless would be nice. (not required)
Reputation for accuracy and reliability.....
Mostly for HD and plinking - occasional carry

Is there a beast like that out there???

The safety is the decocker.
No Loaded Chamber Indicator (at least there isn't one on my 469 which is a slightly older version).
Fantastic and highly under rated pistol.

A safety AND Decocker is rare on pistols since the only one I can think of is the V1 and V2 triggers on USP or USP Compact. Not ambi safety hence the two trigger versions. Only the Tactical models of the USP come with LCIs.

Springfield XD has most of the features on the list and some have thumb safeties. Again not ambi or a decocker.

Ruger P95 is another 9mm to consider. Ambi safety/decocker that fits all your criteria.

Another one from Ruger that fits is the SR9 or 9c that has an ambi safety. No decocker or DA/SA since it uses a pre-cocked striker.

It does occur to me that maybe I have listed requirements for a pistol that doesn't exist!

Beretta 92FS in INOX

Ambidextrous safety/Decocker and you can reverse the mag release.

Vertec or 90-Two models are somewhat slimmer but lack Inox

The Springfield XDM 9mm Compact has both the USA trigger and a grip safety...along with the chamber loaded and striker cocked indicators. A huge plus is its 19+1 capacity, which is a bonus for home defense and target practice. I'm a novice, but the trigger pull and accuracy are really nice. Its also a good carry pistol for when you want to carry, using the smaller 13+1 magazine.

I would also suggest a S&W 3rd gen. I personally have the 6904. Awesome gun, accurate, reliable. 12+1 but can use larger mags with it. Ambi Decocker/Safety. Easily found under $300.

CZ-85 might work for you, if you have to have an ambi decocker. If you can live with a right side decocker, the CZ PCR is a pretty good match, but mag size is 14, since it's a compact sidearm.
Only pistol I've owned recently that had a decocker and safety was the Beretta PX4 Storm, and I won't be buying another one of those.

Budget choice:

Ruger SR9c. No decocker, but covers the rest. Ships with 10rd mag (with pinky extension) for concealed carry, and a 17rd mag. Lots of available holsters. Great trigger. Slim grip for a double stack, which oddly works in most hands-- I'm 6'3", and have large hands. My lady is 5'1", with small hands. We both love the grip.


Mid-price choice:
FNP or FNX 9. Very light, and it's around the G19/PPQ/P99/Caracal C "slightly compact duty" size. Covers most of the criteria.

Beretta PX4. Great shooter.


Higher price:
Sig Sauer P229R.

...and the already mentioned HK options.

Hi All,

I like my Bersa 9mm's. The 9HC (high capacity) is a full sized pistol with a 17 round magazine. The 9UC (ultra compact) is a slightly chunky compact pistol that holds 13 rounds. They are both very reliable, affordable, and the layout of the controls works very well for me.

They don't come in stainless but can be had with nickel slides, and the safety and decocker are combined into one (ambidexterous) lever. Other than that I think they fit the bill.

By way of comparison I've held the Ruger SR9 and several models of Sig's. The Ruger feels a bit "slab sided" in my hand compared to my Bersa's "roundish" feel. The layout of the Sig's controls don't work well for me because I've got a shorter right thumb due to an accident. By all means check out a few brands and models and see what works for you.

Ergonomics of the INOX PX4 is great. Accuracy is good. Mags are a pain to load and the wear on the barrel and slide lugs is terrible. Definite wear showing after 500 rnds.

Another Vote for the Sig SP2022

I picked up a barely used Sig SP2022 last week, accurate smooth trigger and holds 15+1 SA/DA no safety. I swap between this pistol and SR40 Ruger as carry weapons. The Sig is accurate and I spent less than 4 bills on it.

Ruger SR9. It's perfect for someone who doesn't have huge hands. It fits my hands much better than a Beretta/Taurus 92 or a CZ75.
It's got an ambidextrous safety/mag release.
It's striker fired and has a Glock-style trigger, though the SR9 factory trigger feels lighter than any factory Glock trigger I've encountered.
It's very affordable, and very reliable. Mine eats everything I feed it, just like my Taurus PT99.
It's very comfortable to shoot, partly due to the low bore centerline.
It comes with 2 17 round magazines and a mag loader.
It's somewhere between the Glock 17 and 19 in size. I use mine for a CCW.
You can't beat the quality, especially for the price. I'm surprised (and happy, since my wife now wants one)they aren't as expensive as a Glock.
