Hi all,

I'm not sure if this is in the correct section of the forum here but...here goes.

I am getting ready to move out of my parents house and rent a place with my sister. We are also going to (in the next few months but not before Thanksgiving) have a 3rd person coming on as another renter. I currently keep my guns in my father's gun safe but need to buy one for my new domicile (I'll be moving in before Halloween). I have other safety measures in place that I wont detail here, but I need some advice on what safes i should be looking at that meet the following requirements.

1) can hold both long guns and hand guns

2)can be concealed either
a) under a bed (space roughly 12 inches/30 centimeters off the floor)
or b) in a closet roughly 4 feet/1.2 meters wide by 3 feet/.9 meters deep

3) is not going to break my budget...$300(US) or less is best, but I can do up to $500(US)

So....any suggestions to help me out? I really appreciate it.

Thanks all.

Well a safe in that price rage is typically designed to keep kids out, not prevent determined theives. Cheap safes are only effective is if can bolt them into wall studs or floor joists, and I doubt your landlord would appreciate you doing that.

If your pops doesn't live that far from you, I'd just leave the stuff at his house. Things have a tendancy to "grow legs" in apartment complexes...

Medgrl;

You might try looking at Pax's site: www.corneredcat.com. Under the category "Firearms Safety" there, there's an article titled "Securing Firearms In The Home". It won't have an exact answer for you, but may be a help in any decision you make.

Consider buying a greenlee jobsite tool box with the hidden locking mechanism for padlocks. Thats what I did when my safe got too full , so i put my ammo in one and it works slick; $250- at the home depot.

Thanks for all the advice. I'll take it under consideration. as always, nothing but helpful information to be found here.

Buy a cheap cabinet, Stack-on is fine, just to stop anyone from fooling with your guns. In my opinion it's just too expensive to get a safe that'll stop a determined burglar.

Then get insurance:

They have an excellent reputation and its much, much less expensive than a decent safe.
