I have recently aquired a Encore in 45-70 and am looking for a second chambering. There are so many more than there used to be. I considered the 6.5 BRM but brass is only made by eabco and no one else. I am thinking of 6.5 Swiss or 7-08 or 270. Something in that power range. Most important is accuracy. I would consider the 6PCC but it is really a bit too under powered and would require a custom chambering for Encore. Any suggestions?

what are u going to use it for? uve listed some rounds that arnt really alike at all. the 6ppc and the 270 winchester are worlds apart in both specifications and applications.

6.5x47 is more along the lines of the 6.5 and 6ppc (precision rounds) that carries more punch downrange.

7mm-08 and 270 winchester are primarily hunting rounds...and there are plenty of rounds that are equal/equivilent to them.

is this going to be a deer rifle, or a ....... rifle?

i see the TC more as a hunting platform then a precision one...but thats just me.

What are you going to be using it for? The calibers you isted are all over the place. If you waant accuracy 6mm benchrest is hard to beat but not something I would take hunting. Any variant of the ,308 would be a good round.

For hunting deer it is hard to 7-08 or .243win. For vermin .223. You got the heavy side cover already. It is a lot of fun picking the next barrel to get and getting it up and running.

the 6.5 swiss is an excellent round as inheirently accurate as any on the paper punching ranges , and is of sufficient power to take game up to elk size if not larger. the 7mm08 the parent cartridge .308 Win still holds some 30 cal. bench rest hunter class records. either 7mm08 .308 is good loaded down or up the bullet weight class for antelope to moose. the 270 has whole books written about it.

what a quandry! wish i had these tough decisions to make every day!

if I were buying a barrel for an Encore I would go custom and exotic. (if you reload of course)

but what is the purpose here-hunting deer? targets?

I like 6x45, .257 Ackley imp, .357 Herrett, the whisper family (especially the .300 and .375) and a few others...

As far as I know there is no 6.5 swiss... There is however a 6.5 x 55 Swede as well as a 7.5 Swiss.

If accuracy is most important, look for a .260 or a 6.5 of some variety, ideally the 6.5x47 Lapua but I'm not sure such a barrel exists for the Encore.

ANY caliber can be chambered in the Encore. many of the major players in the Encore game (SSK, etc) will chamber a blank in whatever caliber you desire.

Not ANY, but most... some are simply too large. I'm well aware that a barrel could be chambered in 6.5x47 Lapua for one, but he didn't mention price. You won't find a $200 off the shelf barrel in this caliber as far as I know (though you likely wouldn't want a $200 barrel anyways if you want it to be extremely accurate).

The Purpose of calibur

What got me started was EABCO and their claims for the 6.5 BRM in both Encore and the 97D rifle as far as being sub-moa guns. Businesses are bought out, close up etc. I want a supply of brass. The 6.5 BRM is a modified 30-30 but not something a ordinary reloader can do with forming dies and the only supplier is EABCO. Also, I have always wanted a 45-70 so the Encore seemed the way to go. I dont really want to go exotic in these turbulent times. The purpose of the calibur is mostly target shooting. I have a very accurate Savage 22-250 so I wanted something a bit larger in the 30-30 power class that could take deer but most likely will just blow holes in paper . The 6.5 calibur seems about a perfect balance in recoil yet moderate power and penetration. Im just not sure about the accuracy of the 6.5 Swede compared to the 7-08 or 270. I have a Swedish mauser and it is very pleasent to shoot but not practical to scope.

The 6.5 is a great cartidge

It is very accurate and has been used to take just about every game animal on earth. It is the european equivalent of the 30-06. It is quite easy to load for and it isn't brutal on the shoulder. I could keep a box of 20 PMC rounds in an inch and a half at 100 yards with my old iron sighted swede. Another caliber that you might want to consider is the 25-06. It is another great cartridge. Extremely flat shooting and cabable of taking deer sized game and larger. It is also quite easy to shoot. The 25-06AI migh tbe even a little better and, as with any AI chambering, you can shoot the parent cartridge in it as well. Dies are probably a little on the pricey side though.
