I'm looking for a good affordable handgun <deleted>. My standards are not high, it doesn't need to be pretty, or elegant, I really don't care what my gun looks like when the world goes to crap. All I want if for it to fairly accurate, go bang every time, not be too heavy, and be in a common caliber such as .40 S&W, 9mm, 38 special,.45 ACP, etc. Yep. That's all I want. I didn't specify revolver or semi-auto because I'm not sure which would fit my needs better, because I like the few moving parts and simplicity of a revolver, but the higher capacity of a semi-auto. The Hi-Point seems to fit the bill for me pretty well in every thing but weight. Can anyone here suggest something better or lighter weight to me, still under my budget? (250 dollars max)

I would cruise the pawn shops for a used service caliber Glock. Or if you have a line on something like post #4, look there too.

Look at it this way. If you really do need to use it when the S H's the F, warranties and other peoples' opinions won't matter much.

shop hard and find a good 4 inch K frame surplussed out. a used S&W 64/65/19 /66 or Ruger security six or speed six could be had in that price range. I would lean toward the magnum (and in stainless ) myself that way .357 and 38 could be used. ideal weapon for a non shooter who just wants one gun to shoot a few times for familiarity and then put away for safe keeping for a very long time. 38 revolver not the sexiest, newest 20 shot blaster, but its been getting the job done for 100 years. better to have and not need then need and not have

I think I'm going to have to rule out the glock, guys, because everywhere I have looked they are way out of my price range, both new and used ones. Are there any more affordable
Alternatives to a used glock? Which is the best caliber to stock up on<deleted>, 9mm, 40 S&W or .45 ACP? In reply to TennJed, I already have an SKS <deleted>..... I'm not inexperienced with guns, if that's why you suggested getting a rifle instead..... I just have more experience with rifles than handguns.

how about a heritage revolver buds had them for like 180 a while back are you against 22lr for 100 in ammo you could have a pretty nice stash

Define "affordable". What you and I consider to fall within the range of "affordable" may be very different...

In reply to F-111 John: That is what I originally had in mind, but I was actually looking for an alternative to the Hi-Point that is a bit more balanced. To drsfmd: In this case my idea of affordable is below 250 dollars.

Look around for a.22 revolver.

At $250, there isn't a lot that you are going to want to trust in 9mm, .40 or .45. You might find a used gem, but it's just as likely you'll get something with problems that you won't be able to rely on without putting money into it.

Both new and used .22 revolvers can be found under the $250 mark though. Ammo is common and cheap (if you are budgeting $250 for the gun, I'm guessing you are going to be tight on money for ammo also). <deleted> You can stockpile a LOT of .22 LR for a very little money.

It's not the best caliber for defense, but it's certainly useable. <deleted> it can also be used to take small game easily.

get a used model 10, it will be at the top of your budget, but they are reliable, easy to work on and there are an abundance of repair parts out there.

I would try to steer you away from hi-point, I have sold 7 in the past 5 months, 4 of them have been sent in for repairs. You might be the lucky one that gets a reliable one but I would not want my life to depend on a 110.00 dollar gun.

I already have a browning buckmark for my .22 pistol <deleted>, but I was looking for something a little more powerful to use for defensive purposes

[Mod Talk: See how much better the thread is WITHOUT the "SHTF" crap? Remember, we don't do that here. Thanks.]

9mm gives you the most affordable/available ammo choice in centerfire. IMHO, that means the Ruger P-95, the Kel Tec P-11 or PF-9, S&W 59** or the Hi-Point C-9. The Ruger my favorite if accuracy/reliability matter. The KTs are most concealable, but not soft shooters. The S&W is fine. The Hi-Points are cheapest by 1/2 & will get the job done.

If ammo price is less important, you've got more options than I can list. Have fun finding something.

The Hi-Point is a decent piece, especially since you will likely have some $$$ left over for practice. They might not be great right out of the box, but some easy, cheap mods will make huge improvements. The more I shoot mine the more I like it. And 9mm is about as cheap as you can get, too.

They are heavy and a bit unwieldy. Not much you can do about that. But the trigger and feeding issues are easily solved, if need be. Other handguns might be better but there is always a caveat. "You gotta look around some. Or you need to get lucky. If you are patient you might be able to get one for that price."

You can get a C9 RIGHT NOW for under $200 shipped with FFL. Far less if you can score one a a gun show, Armslist, or pawn shop.

buds has the eaa witness polymer 9mm for cheap right now. Also, look into a rossi 4" 357 I love mine and I love my new M&P 9. Food for thought.

If you think you might wanna carry it one day, look at the Kel-Tec P11. Worse trigger than the PF9, but holds more rounds and has a better grip.
Secondhand Ruger P95 might come in around there.
There are several revolvers from Taurus and Rossi that could fall into that price range used, but it sounds like you're more "prepper-minded", and want firepower. Are you sure you're not looking for a rifle? Oh, wait, I see you already own at least one or two... are you configuring them for your intended purpose?

@ MedWheeler My SKS is plain and stock, I do not feel the need to add a detachable mag or tactical stock <deleted>, and my Stevens Model 200 .308 is exactly the way I want it. I'll definitely have to look at the KelTec as well as used Rossi's and Taurus's
