I searched quite a while for my first 1911. I wanted a quality pistol that I would never get tired of, one that I would shoot quite a bit in order to get used to the platform, and eventually carry once I am used to it and verify that it's reliable. I checked out a bunch of different brands, got a bunch of advice from everyone I could and came to the conclusion to buy my first Colt Commander. I Shot about 100rds through her today and she ate everything without a hitch. I love blued guns and the deep bluing of the Colt looks great IMO. Eventually I might put some different grips on it, and possibly a beavertail down the road, but for now I'm planning on shooting as much as possible! Anyway, here's a few pictures of it!

(I apologize for the quality as these are taken with my cellphone and I'm about the least artistic person in the world as well.)

Great choice my first Colt was a blue Commander I have 3 now and other Colts They will grow in number.
Once again you made a good choice Doesn't need a beaver tail Colt set up works fine

beautiful, i had the chance to buy a colt gold cup along with my kimber...i bought the kimber and a para doublestack *stupid me* congratz, thats a beautiful gun. OH and welcome to the world of fine expensive guns, from here you will only spend more money on more 1911's lol they are addictive.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. Does anyone have any suggestions for holsters for this gun? With my XD I carry 4-5 o'clock in a galco IWB holster. What are some of the good IWB holsters out there for 1911's? This gun is pretty heavy so I was considering the crossbreed supertuck holster as it looks like it could really spread out the weight of the gun to make it more comfortable, but I've never actually seen one of these in person. Are they really as comfortable as advertised? Does anyone have any suggestions for other carry options for the 1911 that I might like better? I'm brand new to 1911's so any suggestions are appreciated!

Well, if you've got to have a 1911, might as well go with the company that invented em.

For the record, 1911's usually make me vomit but for some reason the Colts look kinda good. Maybe it's the old school rollmark or lack of front slide serrations.

I also searched a long time for a Commander 1911. I looked at tons of old ones as well as new, and in the past also had owned a custom Caspian in .40. I finally decided the current production Colt Commander 1991 model was the way to go - very affordable and, well, "Colt." I picked this one up this spring and love it - it's just like yours only I added some vintage early '70s commander grips I had int he drawer.

The current Colt Combat Commander (model 04691) is a really great value in my opinion. FYI - don't be too fast to swap the grip safety. The classic 'rat tail' safety on these is pretty hand-friendly as well as carry-friendly. It's very minimalist to provide little to hang up on when under clothing, yet has a gently curve to be friendlier to the web of the hand than the older style.

first 1911

And it's a beauty. Beware, though. 1911s tend to want company.

Oro-
Those are great looking grips. I really like the lighter wood. If i change out the grips I was thinking of getting something a similar color myself.

DG -

Those are the Colt "Sandblast" grips that were on Commanders and a few GM's from like '71 to '76. They can be found occasionally in classifieds and ebay, etc. They are sandblasted Walnut so they have a nice grippy texture, but a different look and less aggressive feel than checkering. Plus they are "historically" correct for a Commander. Actually, I liked the stock grips, too - I didn't toss them but put them on a Norinco I have and they feel pretty good, too.

Lots of buyers are really happy with recent model Colts, and they are really competitively priced to other new manufacturers. Especially the 1991 series.

my first 1911 is a Gold Cup National Match... a real sweet shooting pistol....

Can't pick a better first gun than a 1911, especially a colt. My first 1911 was a colt GI model and now I have 8 1911s, but that first 1911 still shoots perfectly and still goes to the range when I feel nostalgic.

Hmmm... Starting to feel that way now...

Congrats, enjoy.
