My rules are this:
1) Colt factory, checkmate or metalform mags (they make most of the Colt factory ones, that's what the "C" and "M" mean on the bottom). Other vendors use these OEM makers, too, like SA, so there are others that work, too. I like Tripp mags a lot. I had good success with Les Baer mags, too.
2) 7rd, not 8. More reliable.
3) Any mag that has a problem, get's a Tripp conversions kit with their new spring and the skirted polymer follower with the steel insert for positive slide-stop activation.
I have had poor success with CMC shooting stars and Mec-Gar mags (I believe meg-car is oem for Kimber). Under no circumstances buy a "GI" style mag knock-off. These are the ones that abound at discounters, Gunbroker, and gun shows. Just worthless. I do not use Wilsons as I detest their base pads and they do not offer a true flat-bottom mag, and they are overpriced. But they do work well when I had some.
