It finally stopped raining around 3 PM yesterday. I decided to get out in the woods and see if the squirrels were as tired as I was of being cooped up in a dry place.

I slipped into a patch of woods that have several water oaks that dropped their acorns late. Dropped my cushion on the ground about 25 yards from a big den tree and, about an hour later, this is what I left with.

I had a blast, got some fresh air and the makings of a great supper. Life don't get no better!

That photo tells a great story. Great way to spend an afternoon.

Some of my best hunts have come after periods of continuous rain. Not only are animals active, but one's sound and scent are muted by the wetness. Many of my best Toms look petty lame in pictures because they were soakin' wet when shot or because their death flop was in a rain soaked field/woods.

AABEN: The rifle is a Remington Model 5 in 22 LR. It was made by Zastava, I believe, and is very accurate with CCI Mini Mags. The rifle and ammo will do their job as long as I do mine. I grew up hunting squirrels and it is still one of my favorite activities.

If a person is willing to brave the elements this time of year, the woods are empty of hunters and the hunting is good.
