I am sure you guys have heard about this. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110213/ap_on_re_us/us_stabbing_spree I just got to wondering what NY residents could do to protect themselves from someone in a subway/train with a knife? Sure a gun would be nice, but we all know NYC policy on guns. So, any ideas on how to defend against an attacker with a knife?

Also, seems like we may have to ban high capacity kitchen knives and only alow 1 gallon gas tanks in NYC.

Yeah, but what is the best tactic to defend against a knife attack? Lay on back and use feet to fend off stabbings?

If you're in an area that does not permit CCW, then you should have a nice stout cane or walking stick. A drugged out spray painting punk with a kitchen knife should be able to be fended off if not have his arm broken, with little problem.

Living in the Peoples Republik Of Maryland, I guess I'm used to going about life with no gun around. Going downtown in Washington D.C. is the same. But I will always have one of my heavy Irish blackthorn walking sticks with me, and right there in my hand. Totally legal, even on airlines. Ask any old beat cop what can be done with a stout stick.

Back when I was growing up in D.C., we had this game we played in the alley. Stickball. Surprising how good you can get hitting a little hard rubber ball thrown hard with a nice stick. Kind of the same principle. A 35 inch long blackthorn or hornbeam stick will do the job. You don't need a gun for that idiot.

In England, the appropriate response according to police is to open your umbrella and poke them with it. The police actually gave that advice in a pamphlet.

In NYC, the appropriate response according to police is to call 911 on your cell phone while getting stabbed.

The actual proper response is to respond with wrathful violence. It would probably be a combatives based solution if the distance is extremely close. Even if the good guy had a gun, he or she cannot draw faster than the knife if the bad guy is within five feet. The person has to know how to do a variety of unarmed defenses. His or her training needs to be up to date with recent practice. Furthermore, the standard felon "sewing machine" attack is very difficult to defend against. Marc Denny provides a solution called "The Dog Catcher". This maneuver requires some training and good physical fitness to accomplish...and it must be followed up with extreme unarmed violence. (Again, unless the gun is in the hand at the time of the attack, the solution is movement and combatives).

Effect a slight 'limp', and, walk with a stout Cane ( and learn how to use the Cane, of course...)

Why effect any limp at all. You're not breaking any law, and no reason you can't have a nice rustic blackthorn stick with you for just a personal whim. In most big cities, it's not unusual to see a man with a walking stick. Not common, but not rare either, for the street wise. If asked about it, all you have to say is "I carry it because I feel like it." Not a darn law anywhere. In fact, the Americans With Disability Act makes it a big no-no to ask. I've walked right through TSA security with my stick, and all they asked was to X-ray it to make sure nothing was concealed in it. Trouble is, most people are too self conscious to carry it and act normal. And if anyone asks why you're not limping, you can tell them it's a back problem, not a leg problem, and to mind their own business.

You CAN'T defend yourself and it's NOT considered DESIRABLE that you do so.

Those in power in NYC prefer that you pretend that you will be "protected" by the police and die passively. They fear a lawfully armed citizen FAR more than they fear a maniac with a knife, or a gun, or even an airliner.

When I heard about it and realized the attack took place in NYC I just shook my head knowing all to well that the chance of a good citizen around and under attack as well with a legal concealed firearm was slim to none.
Thought about this a good bit today and even before I read this thread.
I guess all they could do is run or start throwing things at the guy or if one was lucky enough to have a stout cane they could, well, cane the guy.
Glad I dont live there.

Stand near "Emperor without clothes" Bloomberg. His phalanx of armed NYPD bodyguards will deter the bad guys.

mbogo

emporer with no clothes !

Best idea was standing next to the mayor as he doens not need to be armed.:banghead:

He has heavily armed and trained people to do that for him.:banghead:

I was born and raised in that chitty and advise all to GET TRAINING in some form of martial art.

Best and fastest is MMA or kick boxing.

AND learn to use a stick, and carry a umbrella or walking stick at ALL times.

You might see a proliferation of 'sticks' soon as most citizens want to be able to go about their daily stuff and remain unmolested.

I took the subway for 25 years and didn't have the problem of someone attacking me.

I carried a knife for protection so would have relied on that in a fight. Let the grand jury figure it out.

I doubt you would do time for defending yourself even if you had a gun. If you remember Bernie Goetz who shot a few attackers on a subway, he was told to keep his mouth shut and take a plea. He didn't and claimed his constitutional right, it was an unjust political decision, but he was given a choice and he chose jail.

If you ever been on a subway platform or riding you know how crowded they could be. If someone walks up to you with a knife and wants your money you can give it to him or draw your gun and hope he doesn't stab you first, possibly causing to fire your gun into a bystander which could over penetrate and hit another passenger.

What I have in my wallet is not worth killing innocent people over.

I guess you could wear body armor, but then if you jay walk you get an extra five years.

Totally! I think we should disarm all the NYPD who are in the subways too, lest their shots overpenetrate! As you can tell, I am being saracastic.

This is a common misconception I see on even self-defense minded forums. Some guy isn't coming up to you and kindly asking for your wallet. He/she is threatening to kill you unless you give them the wallet. If I use deadly force in that instance, I couldn't care less about my wallet; I am responding to the threat of criminal deadly force against me.

The police are better trained than you and if a cop shoots someone he has the mayor, the union and the police department on his side. Yes the problem of civilians being accidently shot by a cop happens in NY to often but when it happens the city gets sued.

Are you that "quick on the draw" that you could shoot someone with a knife standing 3 feet from you? Do enter dangerous situations like a NYPD officer would, conditioning you for stressful situations? You don't care about your wallet but if shot a child accidently would you care then?

The hell with the money, report it to the conductor, you never know the guy might get caught.

Hey GambJoe, you have absolutely no idea if the cops are trained better than any of the members of this forum. Lots of us probably train a lot more than your average cop does. What if you hand your wallet over and he decides to kill you anyway? No amount of money would get me to move to NYC.

I am with TexasRifleman.
Criminals do not ask for the wallet or your car keys anymore and then leave you alone.
They rape, torture and kill and then they take your stuff like it is nothing.
So shoot often and get good at it. Move away from communist NYC or bring your
mother-in-law with you and use her for cover. lol.

Cheers,
e.
