The Cheaper than Dirt catalog has a QD scope mount for the H&K 91/93 series for about $90. I think I have seen this same mount offered in a Shotgun News ad some time back, too. Anyone know what sort of rings this thing uses?

It's hard to say without seeing the exact mount you're talking about, but the most common HK 91/93 optics mount is the so-called "claw style." Original claw style mounts by HK cost hundreds of dollars, but $90 is about right for a TAPCO or other aftermarket copy. They are the original "quick detach" optics mount, and allow use of the irons even with the scope on. Here's a pic of my PTR-91 (HK-91 clone) wearing one:

They are designed for a STANAG type scope, which bolts directly to the mount. As you can in my picture, however, you can also buy a STANAG-to-picatinny rail adapter and use any picatinny type rings, as I did.

One caution -- the big downside to these mounts is how high the scope sits. The scope becomes very difficult to use without some sort of riser or cheek rest added on to your stock.

I believe it is a Tapco mount and it seems to be a close copy of the original H&K claw mount. I have a genuine M91 that I got in the early 1980s from a friend who owed me some money and gave me the rifle in lieu of the cash which he couldn't come up with in a timely fashion. I really didn't want this rifle but he insisted so I wound up with it for the $300 he owed me.

I bought an H&K mount and at the time it cost about $89 which was a lot back then. Then in 1987 the rifle was stolen in a burglary so I sold all the accessories they left behind, like that mount, the bayonet and a bunch of magazines to a local gun shop figuring I'd never see that rifle again.

Well, 17 years later the cops in another state called me and asked if I wanted my stolen gun back. They had confiscated it from a drug dealer and it looked no worse than the day it was taken from my home. Now I'm thinking about getting another scope mount but I can't recall what sort of rings the original used and I don't know what the Tapco uses. It looks like yours has a rail mounted on it? Does this rail connect to the mount and then the rings go on the rail? Is this similar to the original H&K system?

Yes, the rail goes on the mount, and any rings for a 1913/picatinny rail will then fit on the rail.

I don't know if rings are available that bolt directly to the mount and can be used with a 1" or 30mm scope. Even if such rings are available, you wouldn't have any ability to control the position of the scope, meaning eye relief would be a crapshoot. With the rail adapter, you can move the scope exactly where you want it.
