Scope and Mount for PTR-91?

I got a 3rd party mount for my PTR-91 that won't seem to stay tight. It still moves no matter how much I tighten it. I wanted to get one of the H&K claw mounts with scope, but I am somewhat confused by all the options.

Cheaperthandirt has a claw mount and new production scope sold separately that are $200 or less total. However, the combo claw mounts with German scopes military scopes are $300 or more. Of course the new scope doesn't mention who made it so maybe I answered my own question. I was just curious if anyone had tried these cheaper options before.

The Cheaperthandirt stuff is all junk chinese stuff. I originally had purchased the T-28 scope from Tapco and mounted it on my PTR-91 and was horribly disappointed. It wouldn't hold zero, the optics were cloudy and had severe flaws, and the mount wasn't secure. I was happier with iron sights, since I could at least hit what I was aiming at with them.

I doubt the Widener's link is for both the scope and mount, if it is it's a killer deal.

I ended up purchasing the combo from Dan's Ammo, and couldn't be happier. The scope I got from him looks like it was never issued, and is easily as clear as any of the other glass I have on my rifles. For the money the glass can't be beat. A couple years ago you'd have paid twice as much for the scope, and probably been happy to. Dan's sent it with a bunch of extras, a magazine, the scope container, a cleaning kit, etc.

I wish I had bought the real Hensoldt scope right off the bat instead of wasting my money on cheap garbage. I'd have saved myself a couple hundred dollars right there.

I second the recommendation of Dan's Ammo. I bought his Hensoldt Fero Z 24 kit, too, and I'm very impressed with it. Mine appears to be unissued, also. The optics are clear and rugged, and the mount is rock solid. Here's the kit as I got it from Dan's:

I also bought a Hensoldt set from Dan's and cannot be happier. It is the real deal and essentially new.

Sportsman's Guide sells a lesser model but it is also used and is only a few dollars less than the model sold by Dan's.

Widener's seens to be the same as Dan's at a much lower price but condition and other accessories are not noted on their advertisement. (Would be a great deal is identical to Dan's.)

Dont get the orriginals. Mounts or scopes. They are overpriced like whoa for what they are. Unless of coarse you are going for orriginality. Tapco has a great G3 type mount, and i have a bushnell 4-12x30 on mine. Its as much as you would ever need. ive dropped/knocked over the rifle a few times with the mount taking a hit or two and its still zeroed. Its a nice mounting system HK came up with. Youll have to take your rear iron sight base off though.

Say what? I didn't have to take mine off, and none of my friends with HK91's and PTR-91's had to remove their rear sight bases, either. One of the nice things about the HK claw mount is that you can use your irons with the scope mounted.

I was using the Bsquare mount I got from MidwayUSA. It mounts high enough to use the irons also. I didn't have to remove them. The mount seems to fit tight, but slips a little.

MechAg, I just received a Hensoldt Z24 with mount from www.wideners.com
for $290 and from my research that is a pretty good deal. They have a few left so if you are interested you may want to hurry. I've yet to take it to the range but it attached to the rifle nice and tight and the optics are of good quality. So far it seems like a good buy.

FNB, Any tips from your previous zeroing experience? I'm planning on using the same type of ammo you mentioned, do you have any revised figures for printing at 50 yds and 100 yds for a 200 yd zero?? Thanks for any help!

I gave up on the mount I had. I am not sure if I will buy a new mount and scope for my PTR or finally get a mount for my M1A. I now have a Leupold VXII that is doing nothing. Neither this month though. Got to catch up on bills and such.

I think I will go back to the irons and make certain they are set right for now. I'll come back to the scope later. I expect I will get it, I am just not sure when.

I don't have any figures for printing. I was using the 5" and 8" shootnc targets at 200 and 300 yards. If you can hit the 5" target at 200 yards, you are zeroing in pretty good. If you can stay on the 8" target at 300, I would say that is pretty good. I would just adjust for 1 or 2" high at 100 yards and see where that puts you at 200 or 300 yards. Zeroing at 200 would be the thing for me. For me, going through 60 or 80 rounds playing with targets is what makes it fun. But then I bought my ammo when it was cheaper.

Check out the claw mount made by ARMS. Its a flat top that will allow for a lot more versatility than the others and it will repeat zero.

There are a number of crappy copies floating around, including mounts made for airsoft that look very real. If the mount does not have the spring loaded plungers on the underside of the mount, where it rides on the rifles receiver, its probably airsoft, and if its not airsoft, then it still most likely wont work.

My buddy got one of the airsoft mounts at a gun show from someone selling it as a real mount. The $100 price tag should have been a giveaway. The mount wouldnt hold zero on the gun, let alone on//off. These days, buy from a reputable company or person, or your on your own otherwise.

As for scopes, I REALLY like the Beeman SS-3 1.5x4, or the Leupold 1.5x5. Both work well, but the Beeman on an ARMS mount will fit in a cargo pocket.

This is the Beeman on the ARMS mount on my MP5. It sits more to the rear on the MP5 due to the lugs being in a different position than they are on the G3/HK91. When the scope is set for the 91, its centered on top of the rail.

Brugger and Thomet produce an excellent 'Picatinny' rail scope mount for the H&K G3/91/PTR rifles.
It won't slip, you can mount any kind of scope or dot sight your heart desires and they aren't inexpensive.
Then again why would you buy what is now a thousand dollar rifle and put a scope mount on it from any placed called "Cheaper than" and expect anything more than mediocre performance?
