I've had a concealed carry permit in my state going on 20 years. The current one expires in mid November this year, (2020), clearly printed on the front of the permit. County Sheriff offices are not open for in-person renewal during this COVID mess, so it has to be done on-line. Renewal is taking 90 days or so once papers are submitted, so I want to get this done ASAP.
I jump through all the hoops, input all the required information, which includes the carry permit # and expiration date as mm/dd/yyyy. I enter the appropriate dates and numbers, and double check, then go through another twenty minutes of stuff, until I get to the last page, which I click on to pay. I get a red window that says my permit has expired and I have to recertify in order to get a permit. In NC, as long as the permits don't completely lapse (renewal begins before the expiration), you don't have to recertify. According to my math, I still have 6-1/2 months before my permit expires; that a bit more than 90 days, and as long as the permit hasn't expired before the renewal is submitted, I'm okay. If the permit expires before the renewal is issued and received, I just can't carry until I have the renewal in hand.
I guess I'll have to call the Sheriff Office tomorrow and see what's going on.
