Excellent Handgun Carry Permit Renewal Experience

I could have saved the drive and just mailed it in, but then I'd have had to find a stamp ;). Also, by handing it off I get a copy with the examiner's signature verifying I'd turned it in.

You can renew as much as 6 mos in advance in TN. So, if you're used to mailing things (we're almost entirely electronic in our house so we primarily just get mail instead of sending it) you can just print it off, fill it out and send it in.

Sounds nice ... in TX you have to retake at least part of the class, including the shooting part ... but .. by the time my CHL needs to be renewed, I'll be a senior citizen! and it will be fairly cheap ... except for the ammo, which will probably cost $100 a box by then ...and of course that's if we can still own guns by then, with Helmet Hair in office ...

when they kick at your front door,
how you gonna come?
with your hands on your head
or on the trigger of your gun?

I think you can do your permit thru the mail. go to ushandgunlaws and download the form and mail it. Got my non resident permit that way. Cost was $20 for 5 years.

You might have been able to do that as a non-resident. A non-resident can pick whichever Sheriff he wants to submit a non-res app to, and can find one who will do this through entirely the mail. Residents must [strike]sometimes[/strike] apply to the Sheriff of the county which they reside, or the city police for Philly residents. Some require you to in apply person. Some require you just pick it up in person. It depends on the Sheriff for the county.

York County Sheriff Bill Hose is a supporter of gun rights. His office's policy is we've got to pick it up in person.

Just to nit pick but if he was much of a supporter wouldn't he make it easier for the guy that works 8-5 to get it?

That does seem pretty inconvenient. Having to take a long lunch once every five years to get a permit renewed is enough to break a man. Just the other day I was complaining that none of the gun stores around here were real 2A supporters because I couldn't find anyone to sell me a box of 7.62x25 ammo on a Sunday morning a 6 AM.

Does every body have that flexibility? Can the guy that takes the bus to work and lives in the bad part of town and probably really needs a permit ask plan a bus trip to the sheriff's office? Can the guy with the factory job ask for a long lunch for something like that? More importantly, why defend the sheriff's actions? The guy has already paid $50 or whatever, been photographed, maybe printed, and background checked. If we're serious about considering this a right, aren't you being a little apathetic about it? What sort of right is it that a resident of the state has to take time off work to get permission to carry and I just sent in a form and had a PA permit mailed to my front door? Shouldn't PA residents get at least as convenient a process as I do?
