Hello All,

My question is simply is there a product I can use to aggressively prevent rust on a blue finish. I don't want a product that will eat my gun, and that is safe to use.

I have 2 keltecs (love/hate relationship) that I carry for work. They sit in my pocket. THe blued finish on the keltecs looks like it attracks a small discoloration on the slide that is rust in color, but wipes off. I want it to stop from building up though.

Want a guarantee? Cosmoline and a desiccant. That, however, may not be conducive to having the gun immediately available for use.

I would use a good CLP like M-Pro7 or BreakFree for cleaning at least once a week, and lube with white lithium grease.

I do think the above is a little overkill, but you said aggressive. ;)

you might try to get them refinished but that is a little pricey for a kel-tec?
But the Gun-kote, Dura-kote, or Cerakote finishes sound like thay would hold up well in the extreme carry conditions you describebeing in you pocket all day.

Or just clean them atleast once a week as was suggested in an earlier thread.
Also, get good wipe down rag, like rig rag or rusty's rag(silicone sheep skin) and use them daily if needed to prevent rust.

Boeshield T-9 or Corrosion-X are both full-on corrosion preventative compounds and are probably the best thing you can do short of having them refinished.

Boeshield was developed by Boeing for aircraft, but you can buy it at West Marine and other boat stores. It dries to a very thin, waxlike coating (clear) that shields the metal from oxidation.

I suspect you can probably get CorrosionX at West Marine also, but haven't looked.

Buy a whole bunch of cosmoline, heat it until it liquefies and pour it into a .50 cal ammo can. Suspend the pistols in the center with string and allow the cosmo to harden around them. Just shut the lid and they'll be good forever.

On a more serious note, you could try this company, they adverties on the KTOG forum...http://www.ccrrefinishing.com/hg.htm A P3AT or P32 slide is only $39, other slides are $79. All metal parts for $119

Wax. Car paste wax, RenWax, Commercial floor wax.

Oils and greases will just transfer to your pocket. You need something that provides a dry layer of corrosion protection.

If you wipe the gun down with rem-oil every day you should be fine.

If you want something that protects more than that, try some gun wax.

Old School: Wipe it off with an oily rag every day or so. Worked for years.

New School: Silicone Spray. I've been using it for years. Spray it on, buff it off. Not only stops rust, but fingerprints don't even show. You can find it under various names in most any place that sells automotive stuff.

I bought a can of Mpro-7 CLP to use on my LCP. I sweat a lot and the regular hoppes oils weren't working well. I wipe the outside down every week or two with the stuff and let it dry for a bit before I wipe it off. Every other time I do this I field strip the gun and do the same to the barrel. I'm not very deligent with doing this but I don't have any rust on my LCP.

Eezox has been the best I've found. havent had a speck of rust on anything since I found it. Its a pretty good lubricant too.

If, after reading this...

...you have no desire to try Eezox, I will never know why. But it's your choice.

I read these about two years ago, and have been using Eezox ever since. I have a can of Corrosion-X and I've never shot the first squirt from the can. I also have a number of other CLP type chemicals, all sitting here gathering dust.

Eezox is not easy to find, nor is it cheap, but my guns deserve it. :)

rust prevention

Some of these cures are going to make you stink and show a greasy procket. For constant carry in a pocket I might try to find a stainless steel gun.

Only if you over do it. Just about everything will to some extent. Once dry, Eezox really has only a faint odor.

Stainless will rust too, and needs constant attention, especially under the grips, if you sweat.

I recommend Johnson's Paste Wax - the amber colored wax in the big round can. Put it on, let it dry and buff it up. Very effective corrosion stopper. Doesn't hold dirt like oil or grease will. I've tested it on bare steel with saltspray several times and it works great.

Yeah, what he said.

Anything made of "hide" will absorb and retain moisture. You are then doing the equivalent of holding a wet blanket against the surface of the gun.

You want the rust prevention to be at the gun level.
