I've been lurking in the shadows reading posts while trying to decide on which scope to put on my new Ruger M77 30-06. After some careful consideration, and many trips to the gun shop, I recently purchased a new Redfield 3-9x50 for a number of reasons.

Here is my problem, and the reason for my first ever post on these forums.

I'm waiting on Ruger to send me the 6BHM (super high) ring that is necessary to mount the scope so I took the scope home with me after buying it instead of leaving it at the shop. Out of curiosity, I pulled it out of the box and laid it next to the rifle to get an idea of how it would look. In doing so I noticed that it seems as though when the scope is mounted with the Ruger rings that the forward ring will be pressed tightly against the objective bell and the rear ring will almost be pressing up against the ring that changes the power from 3-9. I'm at a complete loss as to what to do. What are my options? Do I have to get a new scope, or is there another mounting system that I can use to put this scope on the rifle.

Like I said, I'm at a loss and any help would be appreciated.

Ruger makes extended rings. They probably could tell you if the extended rings would work with that scope.
Leupold makes extended rings for the 77.

Burris makes bases that fit on the Ruger, and take Weaver rings. Those might work.

The Redfield 40mm 3-9x has a longer mounting length than the 50. That seems to be common with a lot of 50mm-objective scopes, although some are longer.

Ruger's extended, or offset, rings are for scopes with 42mm objective diameters. I looked on Leupold's site and didn't see any extended rings for a Ruger. Which Burris bases would work? I had a hard time reading their chart.

Awesome! Thanks!!! I definitely looked in the wrong place earlier.

Looking at it again, I think my only options are to 1. replace the scope, or 2. get different bases. The Ruger mount locations are all ready too far apart and it doesn't seem like the extended rings wouldn't work.

As much as I love the Ruger ring system, one of its drawbacks is that it does not provide alternative mounting locations to get the rings set up 'just so' for a particular scope, and the ring spacing on the long action rifles can be rather inconvenient. If you cannot get the Ruger extended rings to work, the other option is to go to a Weaver/Picatinny rail base (if you have a Ruger rifle that has the front and rear rings at the same height).

I have taken to using the Bushnell 3200 and 4200 series scopes on my Rugers, in large part because they have LONG bodies and seem well suited to the ring spacing of the Ruger.

I second the Bushnell Elite series as they are long enough to mount comfortably on 06 length actions and they are very nice scopes :)

Talked to a tech at Ruger today and was told that they didn't even make extended rings (not that they would help anyway) The irony of this is that they list extended rings right on their website.

ANYWAY, the guy told me to call Leupold or Burris and talk to them about bases that might work. :scrutiny:

I think once I get the super high ring back from Ruger, I'm just going to take it into the shop and have the gunsmith look at it and tell me what he thinks. I'm just ready to be done with this whole nightmare.

I remember buying a set of bases from Midway that converted the Ruger to accept Weaver rings. They had the Ruger lug and screwed on like the regular Ruger rings but the top was slotted for Weaver Mounts. Used Weaver double extention rings to get the scope positioned right. Don't remember what the scope was. ??

the only bases I've found that work with the Ruger integral mounting system are the Burris bases that G27RR recommended I look at. However, Leupold (as one would expect them to be) was very helpful and when I told the tech what my problem was it took him less than a second to tell me the EXACT rings that would work for me. So, we'll see what happens. Once I get the Leupold rings I'll have a full set of Ruger high rings, new in the box, if anyone is interested.
