i have spent the last hour or so looking for the process on how to properly do this and I am not sure I am totally understanding how to do it.

I have a new Aimpoint PRO that I am going to mount and sight in tomorrow. Can someone please walk me through the correct way to get a 1/3 co witness?

Thanks guys.

I don't believe you can. If i'm not mistaken the PRO mount comes with a spacer that is needed to have direct cowitness with AR sights. Without it the red dot will sit below the AR sights. Maybe if you buy a second spacer, long enough screws and use both spacers it will work.

The mount that comes with the PRO (QRP2) provides an absolute cowitness, not a lower 1/3 cowitness. You'll need some type of additional spacer to raise the red dot. I'm no expert on what exactly you need, because I'm happy with the absolute cowitness of my PRO (but I'm sure someone here has the answer).

Fishbed - do you have an A2 front sight or a BUIS for the front site.

You don't do anything to "get" a 1/3 co-witness. The Co-witness is a result of how high or low the mount is.

I guess what I am not understanding is - if the red dot is well above the front sight post, as with a 1/3 co-witness, wouldn't the POI of the red dot be higher that the POI for the irons?

Sorry for the simple questions. I am a scoped rifle guy and am just getting in CQC optics.

because the single dot on the optic works independently of the rifle sights. As long as it is zeroed the bullet will go where the dot is no matter how you move your head. This is one of the biggest advantages over Standard sights which require tat you focus on the front and rear sight as well as the target.

It is true that if you line up your rifle sights your Dot will also be pretty much lined up with them. But you can't rely on this for a 100% sure zero.

Gotcha...I appreciate it. I am going to go zero it tomorrow. We will see how it goes tomorrow.

What's really going to blow your mind is this: Try lining up the red dot in windage and elevation with the center top of your front sight post.

If you get it right I'll bet you'll be within 2-3 clicks of having the same zero as your iron sights.

You will need to buy a different (slightly higher) mount. Running a google shopping search for "1/3 cowitness mount" turns up several results.

I use Troy Folding Battlesights (front and rear) and generally keep them folded down. However, there's nothing wrong with keeping a fixed sight up front and cowitnessing with a red dot. In fact - that's what most folks do.

Got the aimpoint mounted... It mounted as an absolute co witness and doesn't bother me at all. In fact I actually like it how it is. Thanks for all the responses.
