I have a Bushmaster XM15 flat top and an AK ITM Arms MK99 with rail over the gas tube. I have an Eotech 512 and an Aimpoint COMPML2 red dots I would like to mount but can't decide on which gun. My question is, does one or the other work better closer to your eye or are they about the same? Or maybe one actually looks better mounted with one of these two choices. Both are fine optics that actually allow me for the first time ever to shoot with both eyes open.

I have Aimpoints on both AK's and AR's, and prefer them more forward than rearward. The farther forward you can get them, you get a better, less cluttered field of view.

If you put the Aimpoint on the AK, an Ultimak rail is the way to go. Its rock solid, and the only mount I know that will allow you to cowitness your iron sights to the dot.

On my AR's, I use a cantilever lever mount as far forward on the flat top as I can get it.

Aesthetically, the Aimpoint in my opinion looks better on the AR while the Eotech looks better on the AK. From a user and cheekweld point of view though I think the opposite works. I can see the Eotech red dot better up close while the Aimpoint at least for me is OK mounted further up front on an AK.

My eotech is mounted as far forward as it will go, have just enough room to turn it on in between the rear flip up iron sight.

personally I like the aimpoint on the Ak because of this mount.

The eotech is my preference for just about everything else.

Mounted both my eotec and aimpoints bridging the receiver and foreend. This distance and balance works for me.

Cheers,

On an Ar15:
Aimpoint ML3, Comp M3- best mounted in a Larue Lt129 cantilever mount as far forward on the upper reciever as possible.

Ampoint T1- As far forward on the upper reciever in the tall lower 1/3rd cowitness Larue mount.

Eotech- As far forward on the upper reciever as possible. A riser mount still helps a little but isn't as critical as with the Aimpoints. If you want to use a magnifier, then the Larue riser mount is key along with the matching magnifier mount.

Do not bridge the gap or touch the forward rails at all. Stay off the fore grips. If your AR is stricty indoor CQB only, then you can go completely forward on the foregrip rails. But that's still silly.

I find a balence a little forward helps stability. I need to chop the front sight and put 13" rails on this carbine. But I'll probally leave this as my KISS upper and get a 14.5" BCM with PWS comp and 12" Larue rail instead soon. The rear sight is up for show only, it stays down improving my view.

On the AK:
Lose the rails and stick with irons.

I would put the Aimpoint on the AK, and the EoTech on the Ar15. The reason being the EoTech, with it's integrated mount, is specifically designed with the inline stock design and of the AR.

With the Aimpoint, you have the means of mounting it into a lower position for use on the AK. If you stick an EoTech on an AK, you will more than likely wind up with a chin-weld rather than a cheek weld. I've tried shooting an AK with an EoTech on it once; it was a horrible solution IMO.
