I have no doubt that this question has been asked before, so I will try to keep it as short and sweet as I can. I want to mount an Aimpoint Comp ML3 on a flat top AR, using a Larue QD mount. If I use the LT-150 mount, will it give me 100% cowittness or 1/3 cowittness with my standard height HK style Troy BUIS. I want 100% cowittnessing, so do I need to go with the RAS II 152 mount?

Also, I may possibly add a 3x magnifier at some point, so do I need to consider the Cantilever LT-129 mount. This seems like a marketing ploy, but I guess it all depends on how long your top rail is. The riffle is a POF 415 with a monolithic top rail, so I think I can get away with a straight vertical mount.

a bump du jour...'cause I've got the very same question.

Flip up Troy Industries in the rear, traditional fixed front sight, and plan on adding an Aimpoint red dot of some sort, but would like to still be able to use the irons in the lower 1/4 to 1/3 of the viewing area without removing the Aimpoint.

An AR Noob...

Most of LaRue's stuff is designed for a lower 1/3 Co-witness. I would recommend that if you want an LT mount, get the LT-129 cantilever mount. It will give you a lot more modularity when positioning the optic. The RAS mount is designed for use with raised clamp-on rail systems like the KAC RAS and the VLTOR CASV. It will NOT give you co-witness. I will actually be below your sight line, and your sights will likely be in the upper 1/3 quadrant, which makes your optic useless.
Call LaRue for confirmation, but given what I know about LT mounts, I'm about 98% certain it'll be lower 1/3. If you find out different, let us know.

Co-witnessing is not one-size-fits-all. You will have to determine what you like based on what is most comfortable for you. I'm only 5'9", but I really can't use absolute co-witness comfortably. I can only use lower 1/3. There are people who are 6' that can use absolute co-witness very well. It's all about what fits you. Selecting co-witness should be based on comfort and physiological reasons, not mechanical reasons like just wanting to be in-line with the iron sights.

I have an LT150 and it is designed for a lower 1/3 co-witness. I do not like that, so it pretty much collects dust while I use other mounts.

I run one of my CompM2s in an ARMS-17 with riser, which has served me OK but which I bought before I knew better than to buy ARMS kit. For the most part, I have moved from QD mounts to the Burris 30mm mounts.

Lower 1/3 works better for a more heads-up CQB shooting stance where the rifle is run in a more isosceles stance, as opposed to a bladed off-hand stance that most use with a long gun.
Absolute works better if you work more off of an off-hand long gun stance.
LaRue works off of this method for a lot of their products.
I believe GG&G has a system for absolute co-witness, if you want an alternative. However, LaRue is top notch.

I guess I better get in contact with Larue. The POF does have a raised rail, but I better check with them on different heights.

Just as an FYI, I have not purchased the rifle yet. I have done my research, and handled a POF, and know that's the one I want. However, due to the price of the gun, I am assembling all the components of the gun I want to put on it, and saving my Cabela's points until I can afford to order one.

I'm wondering about the wisdom of this strategy, with our government being what it is right now. I may be better served to pick up the gun asap, and grandfather it in if they do get banned.

Thanks for the info guys.

Oh, I forgot you have the POF. I think the RAS LT-152 model is the one you want. In fact, I know that's the one you need. I don't think you can get an absolute co-witness with a POF or HK model AR due to the rail height. I believe the LT-152 is going to put you at lower-1/3 again. But call LaRue, and they will get you the info for sure. Then let us know. LaRue has excellent customer service, so no worries.
Man, I need to read better sometimes.
