Being the glutton for punishment I am, I went to the SF Bay Area this weekend (missed the THR shoot - shot hours of pool with best friend instead) with my HK USP 45 Expert ueber-pistole.
No Problems at PDX. Same TSA crew as 3 weeks before. They remembered me. Made them guess make and calibre of gun. They were wrong. Opened case and showed them the ueber-pistole parts - One TSA asked about the O ring hence the show and tell. Very friendly.
At SJC (San Jose PRK Intl) the procedure is we (airline counter person) take unlocked gun case and your key, if key lock, to TSA behind the wall and eventually return with key. Arrrrr...... (or is it; Baaa, Baaa, Baaa)
- This applies to Terminal C and A. I took the srental car shuttle bus to the other terminal to check)
Guess all my email to Alaska did (they did respond - contact TSA - they are in charge of air travel security - sorry we can't help) is drill the procuedre in to the counter people. This lady had the drill down. TSA has not yet responded (sent email at same time), and I am not holding my breath.
So, disregard the web sites at TSA and the FAA. The procedure for firearm check in varies from airport to airport.
I would gather that combination key locks be no longer allowed since after handing off your unlocked gun case, they'll know the combination, even after they lock it. Baaaa, Baaaaa, Baaaaa.
