Has anyone ever had thier ammo weighed by the airlines? Southwest says in their pollicy that "Customers are limited to 11 pounds gross weight (ammuniton plus container) per person". Well, as it turnes out the ammo I was going to take weights 10.7 pounds without packing. With the ammo in the plastic ammo boxes and placed in a plastic handguncase it is 12.5 pounds. I just want to know how picky the airlines are about the 11 pound rule. Is the rule there to stop some body from taking 11.1 pounds or to stop people from taking 50 pounds?

Its too keep you from filling your suitcase. Just take it and don't mention anything. I have never had them inspect my ammo. They only care that the firearm is unloaded, cased, locked, and ammo seperate.

They aren't going to weigh your ammo. The people at the ticket counter BARELY know anything about firearms policy. About all they actually know is that guns need to be in a locked case and you must sign a red tag that says the gun is unloaded and it must be placed inside the case with the gun. A handful might also know that ammo should be in a seperate hard-sided case, but post 911 I've flown with ammo just in the boxes throughout my suitcase.
Also, if you're just transporting a pistol, the case doesn't need to be seperate from your suitcase (i.e. you can put the hard pistol case inside your larger suitcase with clothes, etc.).

I see 11 pounds used as the limit by AA, Delta, Continental, NW and even Alaska air. That looks like a limit based on a DOT/IATA rule for hazardous materials instead of a TSA rule. I'd keep it under the weight limit if you want to fly with any of the ammo.
