I will be picking a friend of mine up at the Roanoke, VA airport sometime in August. I was wondering if one is allowed to carry in an airport if you are not having to go through the security checkpoint. I browsed around on the airport in questions website, but because it is such a small airport I couldn't really find anything useful (I would imagine its a standard for all airports though). Just looking for some insight on the matter.

Thanks.

I believe I may have found my answer. Does this regard the entire airport or just the part past the security check? I would imagine it is the entire airport.

§ 18.2-287.01. Carrying weapon in air carrier airport terminal.

It shall be unlawful for any person to possess or transport into any air carrier airport terminal in the Commonwealth any (i) gun or other weapon designed or intended to propel a missile or projectile of any kind, (ii) frame, receiver, muffler, silencer, missile, projectile or ammunition designed for use with a dangerous weapon, and (iii) any other dangerous weapon, including explosives, stun weapons as defined in § 18.2-308.1, and those weapons specified in subsection A of § 18.2-308. Any such weapon shall be subject to seizure by a law-enforcement officer. A violation of this section is punishable as a Class 1 misdemeanor. Any weapon possessed or transported in violation of this section shall be forfeited to the Commonwealth and disposed of as provided in subsection A of § 18.2-308.

The provisions of this section shall not apply to any police officer, sheriff, law-enforcement agent or official, or conservation police officer, or conservator of the peace employed by the air carrier airport, nor shall the provisions of this section apply to any passenger of an airline who, to the extent otherwise permitted by law, transports a lawful firearm, weapon, or ammunition into or out of an air carrier airport terminal for the sole purposes, respectively, of (i) presenting such firearm, weapon, or ammunition to U.S. Customs agents in advance of an international flight, in order to comply with federal law, (ii) checking such firearm, weapon, or ammunition with his luggage, or (iii) retrieving such firearm, weapon, or ammunition from the baggage claim area.

Any other statute, rule, regulation, or ordinance specifically addressing the possession or transportation of weapons in any airport in the Commonwealth shall be invalid, and this section shall control.

Looks like you found it.Three paragraphs where one good sentence could do the trick.
You can't carry a gun anywhere inside a Virginia airport other than in your baggage.

I believe that is for any airport in the country. No.

No.Many states allow guns to be carried on your person in airports.
Over 40 states of the US allow airport carry in non-sterile areas.

That's a whole 'nother thing, of course you could.

This is about carrying into an airport terminal, on the OUTSIDE of the secured area, like you were meeting someone at the baggage pickup area or dropping someone off, or buying a ticket.

Personally, there ain't NO WAY I would risk it, but there's a lot of others that swear they would. Far too many armed and edgy cops around, at least at the Denver airport. I don't want 15 guns pointed at me while they figure out who is the bad guy.

Enter the "The way we do it in Texas" post.

GTG as long as its not past the secured area. (past the metal detectors) which they dont let you past without a boarding pass or picking up a unaccompanied minor (has to be done at the gate)

Locations such as ticketing and baggage claim are legal.

so, if i had a private cessna, i would not be able to carry onto my plane??

I am curious to the answer to this as well.

At the vast majority of airports you do not have to enter the sterile area to get to your GA aircraft and I have not checked but this may be true at all airports. In fact at most GA airports aircraft owners have the combinations to the locks on the gates that they drive/walk through to get to their planes and do not pass through anything that resembles a security check point or a terminal. In most states the only place you are prohibited armed (assuming it is otherwise legal) is in the sterile area (IE. in the commercial air carrier terminal between the security check point and the gates). For the most part most states treat your GA airplane about the same way they would your car and last time I checked the feds had no regulations about being armed well in a GA aircraft.
