Greetings and Salutations for a Joyous Holiday! As per the help and advise of many of you - I have recently, and sucessfully installed a Tapco trigger group, and Tapco gas piston to my Ak-47 variant. The piston pin was a bear to remove. It broke two tools by the time I decided to drill the pin out. Luckily, I drilled dead center of the pin as it came out as a round sheet metal cylinder - hollow pin.
I wished to make a US made Ak magazine - so I purchased a few Tapco followers to replace the import followers in my mags. On one mag - with a back rib to it, the polymer made follower slid right up to the top of the mag so that the bolt would catch the back of the follower for an empty mag. this is the way I beleive it should have operated.
However, in replacing the import follower in my newer magazines, I noticed the the bolt slammed closed on the empty mag. NOT A CORRECT OPERATION.
In examining these newer, no back rib mags - I noticed that the Tapco follower was not arriving to the top of the magazine. Rather, there were two dimples, left and right on the top of the mag that kept the follower from raising to the top. Instead of altering a $20 mag to fit a $2 follower - I marked the follower where these dimples were - took a round file and created a longated (downward) circular cut into the Tapco follwer. As I suspected, the file cuts allowed the follower to rise over these dimples and hit flush with the top of the magazine.
So, is there anyone out there that can suggest the reliablity of these Tapco polymer made follwers?
Does anyone know of another supplier of US made follwers, preferrably metal constructed?
Does anyone know of a supplier of US made AK mag floor plates? Preferrably metal constructed?
Lastly, a Tapco trigger group counts as 3 compliance parts, US made butt stock, forearm and pistol grip counts as 1 compliance part, and the Tapco gas piston counts as 1 compliance part, US made Tapco follower - 1 compliance part. Is there any other imported part that is US made that anyone knows of - that can easily be installed in my variant??
