As I understand it, its illegal to have any full auto parts in a semiauto. However, if many of the imported AKs have milsurp kit parts, wouldn't it be possible for a full auto bolt assembly to find its way into the gun? How can you tell a semi auto from a FA bolt assy?

you miss understand.

its illegal to have certain parts. but even domestically made guns (colts) use the same parts in their automatic and semi auto guns

certain parts of trigger groups are illegal

Right, so you're saying its ok to put a FA bolt assy in an AR15? Or its okay if it leaves the factory that way, but you couldn't otherwise put one in? I just wanted to be able to tell apart FA AK bolt assemblies from semis. If anyone has any links or pics that would be great.:D

totally dependant upon exactly what gun ya are talking about..... the ATF determines what constitutes easy conversion to a full auto in the case of the AK as long as the third axis pin hole is absent then your o.k and no other parts matter, however because of the Drop in auto sear being available for the AR15 the use of a FA bolt carrier is illegal because this is one of the components needed to allow the auto sear to convert the gun to full auto, same for FA FCG parts as these are a the other part of an autosear F/A conversion requiring no machining of the reciever , with an AK ya must have the third axis pin hole and a cut in the right side lower bolt rail in order to make it a full auto so ya can use any original parts ya wish..... that third pin hole is an automatic conviction and all of the original FA parts are not able to convert it to FA without these receiver mods........

Two totally different gun designs so ya got two different laws/regs if ya already have the F-A parts mentioned in an AR 15 then all thats needed is a few seconds to install an auto sear to complete conversion......

I think you may be confusing a bit of info here about what really makes an AK platform firearm go into full auto.

The bolt and carrier are not what make it into a full auto. The bolt/carrier for a semi auto AK is the exact same as it is for a full auto one. The parts that are different and make it into a full automatic are the disconnector, a slightly differnet retaining spring, and the auto sear.

Obligatory Warning: Without the proper FFL license to build firearms (Class 2 license) you CANNOT add the third hole for the auto sear legally. And I would stay away from using a FA disconnector as well.

Here is a picture of the bolt/carrier (which is the same for FA and semi)

And here is the internals for a full automatic, note the different discconect, the different retaining spring, and the auto sear

So, if you don't own any ARs its ok to buy as many M16 parts as you want?
Just don't play around with "constructive possession". No matter what we think of the propriety of the idea, the ATF takes a pretty dim view of people who have the parts to make full-auto weapons, either in their possession, or shielded by a fig leaf ("Oh, that's not my FA FCG. That's my friend's. He doesn't own an AR-15, but I do."). Play that game at your own peril.

Mike

PS And yes, it's the FCG that matters. The BCG is meaningless, except, perhaps, as further proof of intent in cases of constructive possession. If you don't have a select-fire FCG and a lower set up for select fire, having a M16 BCG means zilch.

Coronach, with an drop in auto sear (how it got its name BTW) ya don't need a FA lower or any lower mods that is why the problem, it does however require an SP1 bolt, the Bolt carriers colt uses in the semi auto are missing the protrusion on the bottom used to activate the drop in auto sear it is present on SP1 F-A carriers in order to use an auto sear with a semi bolt it has to be modified to mimick a F-A carrier and is actually more important than the F-A FCG as the drop in autosear can be setup to act as a fulltime F-A with a semi auto FCG (requires a paper clip to modify) while it cannot be made to function at all with a semi auto bolt carrier..... I've got two of em (yes legally registered) they are fun for wastin ammo and gettin kids all excited when we host shoots
