Saw an AK recently that had a unique selector/safety. It had the normal horizontal paddle on the right side of the receiver but it also had a smaller vertical lever on the left side of the top of the pistol grip; the two levers were linked. You could either use the 'normal' selector, or use your right hand thumb to toggle the vertical selector lever down by the pistol grip. Very, very ergonomic and very, very swoopy.

Can anyone tell me where to get such a gem?

I've seen another with that feature lately as well.. I want to say it was a newer VEPR, but I'm not certain. Might have been an aftermarket conversion as well.

The Galil-style safeties are on the market now.

K-Var has been selling them, so I wouldn't be surprised if one finds them on Kalashnikov variants more often.

I have an unrelated question about AK safety selectors, are there any aftermarket ones? Maybe that looke a little different.

There's an aftermarket safety called the swift lever. Basically a standard safety with a small protrusion on the bottom that allows you to operate the safety with your index finger, thus allowing your hand to remain on the rear grip. They also come with a cut out that engages the operating handle to lock the bolt open.

I have one on my WASR, a neat little improvement. Took about a minute to remove the old lever and install the new one.

That looks like the Cat's *&% ! I am getting tired of the "bloody AK thumb" after long tactical sessions. After the last 3 day class I was shredded!:uhoh:
It's the only AK defect I can find, really.:)

I was looking forward to getting a couple of these neat little devices to install on my Arsenal SAM-7 and SAM-5. Unfortunately, K-var is out and they dont know when they'll be back in stock :( They definetly improve the ergonomics of the AK though. I believe they are meant specifically for milled receiver guns. The Bulgarian AR-something or rather AK based assault rifle uses this device.

Nope, Kace, I do so also. But you need gorilla fingers.

Blackjack makes a nice safety that has a finger shelf, for trigger finger manipulation, for those of you not blessed with simian features. :)

Dunno - gorilla fingers doesn't sound like A Giant Evolutionary Leap Forward <tm>... :D

Anyone heard of a Left hand thumb safety for the AK? Gorilla finger is good for rightys, gorilla thumb is what us leftys need!

That's what that is. Unless I'm misundestanding your question...

The safety pictured is actuated by the right hand (conventional manner) or left thumb (using the new doohickey).

I would rather have to chamber a round than use the stupid AK safety.:barf:
I notice that semi AK's work just fine without the safety installed.

I have a dual safety on all my weapons. One is the finger on/safety off.

The other is the stuff between my ears, though my wife argues about the quality of that safety ;)

the safety pictured is designed for use with the right index finger or the right thunb. I am looking for a safety that works with the Left thumb.

Oh. Duh. I was thinking left side of the weapon. You're looking for something southpaw-friendly, then? Basically, that set-up, but on the right side of the weapon?

Hmm. You got me. I would imagine that it would not be hard to do...but I dunno if anyone has done it yet. :uhoh:

The safety pictured doesnt work like you might think, it works in reverse. You have to pull it back with your left thumb to take the safety off. Think about how thats going to work for a minute and try the motion with your gun. I think you'll see what I mean.

I'm a righty and use the middle finger of my right hand 99% of the time to take the safety off. I dont have big hands and its done very easily and quickly with your hand on the grip. You can also use the thumb method just as easy, and you can actually get the AK's safety off easier and faster than the AR's if you have the rifle cradled in your arms when you start. (The middle finger works the same way with the mag release and most all my AK's mags drop free without help too.)

Most of the AK "add on's" are unnecessary and actually dangerous if you look at them and think them out. All the ones that add the protrusions tend to tear up your hands and catch on your gear. You really gain nothing from them and with just a little practice, you can accomplish the same thing with the stock parts without the associated problems of the aftermarket parts. In fact, 99.9% of the AK complaints go away if you take the time to practice with it and learn how to work it. Most of its problems occur with the added US parts.

If I was to add anything to any AK, it would be the Ultimak forward mount. It, and a good red dot sight, bring the AK's into the 21's century and into line with any of the other rifles for effective combat shooting in any light or condition.

No, you're thinking like I was. The safety pictured (unless I'm really confused) is on the left side of the gun, but is manipulated with the right thumb. He's looking for a thumb safety lever that is on the right side of the gun, so when he shoots left-handed he can use it with his left thumb.

Right? I mean, err, correct?

Mike

PS Yeesh. Why must people be left handed? So confusing. ;)
