Well I don't really like Aimpoints. They don't really suit me. But I like the idea's of a low side mount with a Trijicon, or on the ultimack too.

I'd avoid mounting optics on the dust cover like you see with some of those Leapers/UTG products. It's not stable enough.

Mounting on the gas block is nice in terms of allowing a consistent cheek weld, but it also puts more weight on the front of your gun and puts the reticle further from your eye. It's also debateable whether the gas block cover is a stable mounting platform, but that's probably more a question of product quality.

I've been pleased with the side-mounted rail. It's quick-detachable if you get the right model (like K-Var's KV-04S) and very stable. With forward-mounting, you could have problems if the RDS dies on you and it doesn't co-witness the irons.

I agree with you 100% there. I've been hearing that all over & nothing but good about the side mounts.

I went with a primary arms m3 clone and a quick release UTG side mount. It has been great, two things I dont like about it are, no co witness and impossible to get a cheek weld. I knew this going in so I took the trade offs. I am going to get a peep sight for the ak and I already have the small front post, so this primary arms is going to the sig522.

Some of the side-mounted rails are higher than others, but yeah it can be hard to get a cheek weld if they are too high. It also somewhat depends on the optic. For instance, and EOTech is going to be taller than a mini-RDS or a scope with low rings. You might try putting a cheek rest on the stock.

EDIT: Just looked up that Primary Arms M3. Yeah, it looks like it has a tall mount designed for flat-top ARs. Those are usually too high to get a good cheeck weld on an AK since the stock isn't in line with the rail.

I have a Leatherwood CMR 1-4x24mm mounted on mine and I think it's pretty handy. It works like a red dot if you leave it on 1x with the illuminated reticle on, but you have the option for magnification if you need it. Unlike a standard RDS, you also have an etched crosshair to fall back on if the battery dies, so co-witness isn't as important. If all else fails, it only takes a couple seconds to detach the siderail.
