I'm thinking about picking up an Ultimak gas tube rail mount for a Yugo AK. I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for a cheapo red dot sight? I was looking at Optics Planet and I saw several options for around 50 bucks or under. I'm hoping to find something that comes with a mount that will be compatible with the Ultimak rail, since I don't want to buy expensive rings. Most of the mounts I saw were Weaver style, so I'm not sure they will work with the Ultimak rail.

I've had a tendency in the past to want to try different optics configurations, so having learned my lesson about buying expensive gear and then selling it off, I don't want to spend a bunch of money in case I don't like the Ultimak set up. Later on if I like the concept of a forward mounted red dot I would invest in a quality sight like an Aimpoint, or maybe a Docter Optic, but I don't want to spend that much money on something I'm not sure I will like. :)

Good choice w/ the ultimak it is a the best setup for a weaver mount on an AK. I had an aimpoint on mine and it worked excellent. They make "generic" or clone aimpoints, try checking out some airsoft sites, the ones I've seen were surpisingly clear, but didn't look like they could stand up to much abuse. I would just save and buy the real thing though, you are going to end up wanting one anyway!

With all of the vibration and heat generated by most semi auto rifles (especially the AK), if you shoot very much many of the cheapo airsoft dot sights and replica sights have been none to break. Just fyi. What money you may say, you may end up negating in having to buy multiple cheapo dot sights if they keep breaking. I'm not saying an EOTech, Trijicon Reflex or other uber-expensive dot sight is the only thing you should use, though there are some slightly cheaper dot sights like the Burris Fastfire (usually ~$170 from what I've seen), seem to last longer and be more durable than some of the cheapo $30-40 stuff out there.

I know the ultimak rail is nice but I can't stand the look of anything sitting so far forward on the rifle. I'm tempted for a combloc style mount that sits the optic LOW. LOW LOW LOW. And than add a short scope to my saiga.
