Well my birthday is coming up and i want a good rifle something to plink with and if need be put down racoons that bother the dogs or if shtf to use as a main battle rifle to guard my house and land if need be big if:what:

ak47 7.62x39

mini 14 223rem

fal type rifle 7.62x51nato

would like low cost always easy to get ammo and something i can fix if need be

what is the best bang for the buck and what would you grab and why:confused:

I would say you should narrow your choices or create some more parameters... those are 3 pretty different choices.

HB

i like the ak low cost up front and low cost ammo but dislike it looks and feel

i like the mini 14 low cost ammo and feel but dislike the harder to find parts in a pinch and not know how well it well do as a ranch/backwoods gun

i like the fal ammo cost of surplus ammo but dis like the weight and recoi lplus i dont know if you could run 308win in it plus parts are harder to find plus they are not as cheap "at least what i am seeing 650-750 and up

HB is very, very right.
These guns are not similar at all.

If cost is your main concern, get the AK.

If you want to mount a scope, get the mini 14. By the way, the mini 14 is an EXCELLENT ranch rifle. Lightweight, compact, handy, reliable. The .223 round would be PLENTY for racoons.

The FAL is twice the gun of either of the other two. Twice the power, twice the cost, twice the weight (ok, not quite). The 7.62x51 round would be overkill for a lot of situations.

If you really like the 7.62x51, you could also consider an M1A.

Personally, I would get the mini 14.

Based on your criteria of:

Low Cost = AK

Easy to get ammo = AK

Fix if need be = AK

Most bang for your buck is by far an AK variant of some sort.

The AK seems like your best bet. It's a hell of a weapon that's also loads of fun to shoot! It's so easy to find accessories out there and not to mention they're relatively cheap. Ammo prices aren't too bad either.

I just purchased me a Draco pistol as a fun range gun. I have future plans to SBR it! It's definitely a keeper.

Mini 14 - Great fun to shoot. It's not going to be sniper accurate, but it will get the job done. Bulk pack 223 is affordable.

Now, if you want to spend more for the rifle and ammo, get an FAL. It's a beautiful smooth shooting 7.62 real battle rifle. I will not be cheap to buy or cheap to feed. But it will put a smile on your mug.
